New Here and Wanna say hello

Hi everyone, I am new to fishing in general and I have been out a bunch with a friend and wanted to get more into it because now I am hooked on this now!! So I have purchased my first rod and reel and wanted to know what you all thought. I will be mainly downrigging and trolling so I went with a Shimano Calcutta 400B and a Rapala Magnum Trolling MG20DR90H Downrigger Rod with 17Ib Siege line. Do you think I have gone with the correct set-up and what do you think? Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

That'll be OK I use a Calcutta 400 for that all the time.

Your main line is a little light though downrigging takes the stretch out of mono quite quickly and any nick/scrapes mean lost gear.

So what you can do is to rig a double-cut off a chunk of line double the length of your rod and use a Uni to Uni knot (often incorrectly called a double Uni) to connect the doubled and single lines together this gives you a stout leader that really helps in light line situations.

Tie this knot slowly & carefully it'll save your bacon more than once.

If you're fishing for chinooks , coho and chum salmon you might want to consider getting yourself a single action (knuckle buster) mooching reel.They're not only sportier but a way more fun.You won't get that connected to the fish feeling with any level wind reel.

I looked at the mooching reels as well. I like the round bait casting reels as it will give me the ability to do everything and I like the look of them. The only thing I am second guessing myself on now is should I return this reel and just get the Calcutta 400D. I have the money to do it or should I just stick with the 400B? Let me know your thoughts.

If you don't like the 400B look @ a Tekota- the 400D doesn't seem to be anything special.
