Subject: FN1071-RECREATIONAL - 2010 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada - BC Tidal Waters
In early January, Fisheries & Oceans Canada will be launching the 2010 Survey
of Recreational Fishing in Canada for BC Tidal Waters for recreational fishing
activities completed during the past fishing season.
Recreational fishing is an activity enjoyed by many Canadians and visitors to
Canada. Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducts various recreational catch
monitoring programs in British Columbia each year. In addition to the in-season
programs DFO has conducted a National Survey every five years since 1975
through the cooperative efforts of all federal, provincial and territorial
fisheries management agencies.
The collection of good information is vital for fisheries management and to
ensure programs are properly resourced by the government.
Of the many license holders who fished in British Columbia in 2010, a randomly
selected sub-sample of anglers has been selected to participate in this survey.
Over the coming weeks, survey questionnaires will be mailed to approximately
12,000 licence holders from British Columbia, other parts of Canada and
visitors to Canada.
The purpose of the survey is to obtain current information on the importance of
recreational fisheries in Canada. Survey recipients are being asked questions
about their fishing effort and harvest, direct recreational fishing
expenditures and investments, and their knowledge of DFO fisheries management
programs.
The results of the 2005 survey showed that angling is a popular outdoor
recreational activity in British Columbia and across Canada. The information
collected on fishing related investments, fishing package purchases, and other
direct expenditures indicates that recreational fishing makes a significant
economic contribution to local communities.
The 2010 survey is a valuable assessment designed to confirm recent trends and
discern new emerging trends in usage preference, demographics and expenditures.
A final report of the 2010 survey with Canada wide results as well as those for
each jurisdiction will be published in late 2011.
