New Coyote Spoon Color

Found a new Coyote spoon color. The Cop Car has always been one of my best spoons. This is called the "Border Patrol". The back side is a glow white and it has a red stripe on the front. What do you think, will it work??

Seems identical to the one I used last year with good results.

looks like a nasty boy with a glow white back, no? To be honest I've never had much luck with anything but the old wonder bread.

2 thumbs up. Does it come in 3.5 inches? Where did you get it? GLG

Hey Papa, do you ever use that wonderbread when fishing Sooke ?
i have tried it on winter fish, but mostly use bait in the summer...

I ordered some from Three Rivers Marine in Woodinville Washington and they shipped them to me. They had the 3.5, 4.0 and 5.0 for $4.99. They say that this color is a custom color that they designed and had painted for them. FYI, they also had the Glo Kitchen Sink which I had been looking for.

Here's their contact info:

I have never had any luck with the spoons with white on the back. I would think the copcar with the red stripe in the middle should get similar action and has been a good lure for me.

Thanks Slabby20:)

I thought the same thing about the red striped Cop Car - experience proved otherwise. I don't think I ever caught a fish on that one.

One of the best spoon colors for me was one with silver/chrome on the back side, and a split of lime green and glow-in-the-dark down the length of the spoon.

Found this one by accident one day in June about 3 years ago. My self, and another boat were prospecting for fish and not having a lot of luck. First day, I got one Coho, the other boat, nothing. Second day, we went into Esperanza Inlet and started searching. We split up and kind of hunted in fishy looking spots. At one point, I decided to throw out a third line. I picked the spoon, about a 4" as I recall, and couldn't find a flasher that was rigged and ready to go, so I put the spoon out by itself, about 10 feet above a flasher/anchovy rig on the downrigger.

By the end of the day, I had 6 Coho in the boat. Five of them taken with the lone spoon! The other boat got nothing the second day.

Some days it pays to do something other than what you would normally do.

Hey Jim:
Green/Glow is one of my favourites as well. Had two Coho follow the Scotty clip right up to the boat one day. Rummaged around the tackle box to find something that matched, and sure enough it has been a winner for me ever since. I also like the one with a bit of a tiger stripe pattern.

Well, before they made copcar's with red stripes we made them with red reflective tape, we caught a few fish on it for sure. The best green glow lure I have used is this one.

Is there a concensus on leader length behind the flasher for the Coyote Spoon. I have had most success with 5' but a friend outfished me last year with the same Nasty Boy spoon using 44 inches. Do you think dark days versus bright days would change the leader length?

Thanks

I generally tie about 6' of 60# Triplefish to my spoons as a leader. The length between by two outstretched hands. This way I can put them behind a flasher or run them by themselves as the mood strikes me.

In general, I think a longer leader for spoons is better than shorter ones. The spoon has its own action and if put too close to a big flasher, it might make it too hard for a fish to grab, or the flasher may spook the fish if it is too close.

Rather than saying that 44" is better than 60", I think that you need to look at the action beside the boat at the speed that you troll at. This will give you a good idea on lure action, but not on whether it spooks fish or not.

Or, it could be that the spoon he has was more fishy than the one you had - try swapping and running the same lengths to see what happens. Or it could be just plain luck.

A few years ago, I got running some lure that was just deadly. It outfished my anchovies. Worked great for weeks, then all of a sudden, I noticed that it had not caught a fish in about 4 days. It just stopped catching fish! Sometimes, just when you have it figured out - the fish will change [xx(]

That is another good one!

Also, Tomic makes a nice all Gold spoon that I have had some luck with.

I think basically that the old adage that i learned some 30 yrs ago stands...." all tackle is meant to catch fisherman first and fish second". The one simple improvement i notice that has really suckered most in is the Glow in the Dark! after being down in the deep and not exposed to light, this function nulls itself out after a few minutes. All spoons will work because of there shape and flash which imitate a wounded herring, but dont fool yourself, scent is the ultimate determinate of strike response therefore bait is what catches fish the best

I agree, in most situations bait will out fish a lure...but not always. I have tried either spraying my spoons with WD-40 or applying a little krill paste to add scent. Another trick that can work is to put a little extra bend in the spoon to get it to swim better. You can check the action by hanging the spoon over the side and adjust the bend to get the appropriate action.

Not true at all.

I have Glo tackle that, if I leave it in a lighted room and then shut the light off, will still be glowing hours later, some 8 hours later the technology today is amazing.

Bio-luminescence is an important part of how Salmon find prey many times I've seen Needlefish with a glowing stripe down their side.

I think Glow in the dark tackle is one area that still underrepresented here in BC for both Salmon and Groundfish there are many combinations that are available only on the net.
