Need help on a good way to wind new line onto a fishing reel?

I just picked up a couple of Trophy Tyee reels at the Vancouver boat show and they came with a roll of Maxima 30lb fluorescent line.
Usually I have them loaded at a tackle shop but was just wondering if anybody has a trick for loading them off a spool at home.
I am thinking you need to keep a bit of even tension as they are loaded? There is 400 yards on each so that is going to be a bit of winding!
Guess it will get the wrists in shape for the big one this summer!

Any tips?

make sure it unrolls rather than skips off the end of the spool.
I put a screwdriver through the spool and put the tip in my bench vise. I then place copy of National Geographic over the line between 2 guides, put a finger or two around the line where it comes off the vise to control tension a bit more and wind on the
line.
Sometimes my wife holds the spool on a screwdriver and controls the tension with oven mitts.
I'm sure there are easier ways.

I'd just take the reels and line into your local tackle shop.

I tried to make a tool and it works, but not perfect. Took some 1/2" wooden dowel, predrill hole through center. and glued in a long 1/8" bolt. Put that on your drill, and put the dowel between the 2 handles and let the drill do the winding. Screw driver through spool and clamped to solid surface. The trick is keeping tension on line while controlling drill and holding rod........I know, it's tricky. that's why I started off saying to take to shop.

I run a chopstick thru the middle of the spool of line, position the spool horizontally and with my feet on the ends of the chopstick i control the tension and reel. I usually am watching a football game or something while i do this

this is how I have done it in the past,also using the thumb of my free hand to guide the line onto the spool so it doesn't build up to much on one side...

Good point on having the line not "skip off the end". I assume that twists the line? Maybe thats what caused problems last summer with one of my Islanders that seemed to be getting excessive line twist?

Yes line skipping off the end of the spool will cause excessive line twisting. Years ago i had this problem and had to re-spool 4 reels with mono after having this happen. Even back then a rather expensive waste.

An easy cure for that is to unspool the reel off the back of your boat when going a moderate speed the twist will come out-it's a bit of work to wind it all back in and and it's a good idea to drag it through a damp cloth to remove any salt or gunk it may have picked up.

NO it won't end up in the prop.

No tackle shop required. No spooling machine required.

You will need: Superlube Grease and also Reel lube, a couple of cold cans of your favorite beer chilled ICE COLD, A five gallon pail half filled with water so that your mega spool of line can float in the water.

Step 1: Open Beer and start drinking.

Step 2: Sit yourself down at a comfortable table.

Step 3: Before spooling, go get the requisite reel grease and lube and disassemble the reel. Trophys are made in China and they are basically barren of grease and lube. Reassemble your reel in reverse order of disassembly. Continue to drink your beer.

Step 4: Mount the reel on the but end of a rod and thread the line through the first guide and tie it into your empty reel spool. Continue to drink your beer while performing this task.

Step 5: Drop your mega spool I to the bucket of water and then wind line onto the reel evenly leaving a quarter inch of room on the spool when it's almost full.

Step 6: Drink more beer and repeat as needed.

I put a screwdriver with out the flat tip in a vice pointing upwards.........on top of a couple of rubber doughnuts ..

then I put another rubber doughnut on that and some heavy sockets on top as well..

Then wind it onto the empty reel which is on the rod......using my left index finger and thumb just ahead to keep governable tension on the line while winding....

I like it Sounds, like a hellavuh idea,
I bought a used Triwinder linewinder and went that route, much easier, I redo all my rods every year
and saves on the forearm cramps lol

Thanks for all the great advice guys!
I ended up taking them to a local tackle shop and they wound the line on by machine. Cost me $5.
The titanium reels look great with the green florescent line.
Can't wait till fishin season to try them out.

Yup they do if you mean backing.....I put orange on one of mine so I know which is which in case one starts acting up; easily identifiable.

Do you mean the line itself? Trilene is the Greenie or the high-vis?
