It's been pissing buckets all morning with mixed sleet in Victoria.
Nephew spun out on the malahat and banged up his car but he's okay.
Merry Christmas Mr.weather man !

8-10 cm of wet snot in the Okanagan. Sloppy roads and slippery unpleasant day out on the job sites.

Damn Happy I came back from the OK when I did!
If the Coq is shut down, I can only imagine how bad The Connector is!! DontThere.gif

Can be truly nasty up there on a bad day. Most of the key passes in BC climb steeply and drop fast on the other side, so you don't spend much time at or near the summit elevation. But the Connector keeps you up there for many km because it crosses a high plateau rather than a mountain range. If there's fog or driving snow at the summit, you'll be stuck doing 50-60 km/h for 40 km. Despite the time savings, I'll only take it in winter if the cams, Drive BC and Weather-Can all agree it's clear.

I have only ever taken Coq and 97C Connector. Is an alternative route better in the winter? I have to drive from LM to Kelowna and back in early January.

Hope-Princeton Hwy 3 is okay, but I find it dark, narrow and scary at night in a snowstorm. It is an option if the Coq is closed, and the Coq closes quite often. People from the Southern Okanagan use Hwy 3 all the time, but it will add 2 hours if your destination is Kelowna.
You need to check Drive BC and the hwy Cams and find a window.
Yesterday was awesome when we drove down and back from Kelowna to do a socially distant gift exchange at the Bradner rest stop with the kid and his wife. Today would have sucked and taken forever with the closure.
But this storm was forecasted days ago.
I've driven the Coq and Connector at least 100 times in winter. Only recently with 4wd. Take your time, bring some extras in case of delays.
97C should have dry, crunchy snow in January- not too slippery. I find the plateau pleasant usually, compared to Coq.

Takes an hour longer but hwy 3 Allison Pass (Hope to Princeton) gets less snow than the Coq. And from Princeton to the Okanagan the road stays down in the Similkameen Valley, much less snow and rarely affected by fog. Take a break in Hope, check DriveBC and Weather-Can, make the call then.

If you're going to northern part of Kelowna or Lake Country it could make sense to take the Coq to Kamloops and then over to Kelowna via Falkland and Vernon. All low elevation roads from Kamloops onward. Just remember the summit between Merritt and Kamloops is higher than the Coq proper and can be subject to fog or blowing snow.

Yeah that was a ****** day. We had power out for 6 hours starting at 11:00am. So did our little one’s daycare. So I had to leave work to pick her up and drop off at the in-laws.
Then power went back on for two hours, only to go out again for another 6.
i Almost rear ended someone who slammed on their brakes to a complete stop in the fast lane of a highway for a puddle.
Hopefully all this wet snow/slush didn’t freeze up overnight. Luckily I don’t think it got below 2 degrees, but be careful out there this morning!

Living creekside is awesome but on some days it has its issues and yesterday was stressful. I got lucky the rain stopped or I would’ve been sittin in my boat in the yard. The creek had surrounded my house and the 2 pumps in the crawl space we’re working hard. The creeks at the back but once it gets over the bank it comes from all sides.

I woke up to 35 cm of snow with 1m high drifts. Not a work of exaggeration... it took 3 hrs with the snow blower...

Yikes, time to put in some sandbags Don!

Here in my area of the interior we woke up to about 8” of wet heavy snow. Couple hours on the bobcat to clean it up then another couple hours working my way up one side and down the other of my street to keep the neighbors happy. I can’t stand frozen ruts and bumps of slush in my driveway and it’s supposed to get -10 here tonite. Total change in the weather as it’s been pretty warm up til now. Thought we might even have a green Christmas this year but no chance of that now.
