The Bucktails & Hoochies book was co written by Jack Gaunt & Bruce Colegrave. Bruce Colegrave was third partner of Radiant Lures in those days. By today's gear standards the 1970's facts are correct for a 1970 setup. We are talking wire line, weak plastic flashers, thick skin 4¼" hoochies with heavy mylar dress and two 92553 4/0 hooks.
By today's standards you need to perfect your own gear. Drop the gear next to the boat to make sure the roll of the flasher forces the hoochie to death roll perfectly. The length of the leader may be adjusted depending on the boat speed, weight and drag of the hoochie setup and also the leader type and pound test.
And not all boats idle troll at the same speed. The perfect fisherman will have the prop repitched on the kicker to obtain the perfect performance trolling speed. If you are trolling to fast because of incorrect prop pitch, you can have a prop repitched at the local prop shop.
On the inside the 3" green glow are selling quickly.

Yes.....very interesting...because in the book "Bucktails and Hoochies", Jack Gaunt (inventor of the Hotspot flasher) goes into great detai about how to rig a hoochy with a Siwash and a swivel.

Here are the OVERALL leader lengths (including length of hoochy) he recommends:-

Chinooks (Winter-fast troll)-----------42 to 48"
Chinooks (Winter-slow troll)-------36 to 42"
Chinooks (Large Summer -fast troll)------44 to 50"
Chinooks (Small Summer-slow troll)-----40 to 44"
Coho (Small bluebacks)-----26 to 32"
Coho (Large -fast troll)-----36 to 44"
Coho (Large-slow troll)----32 to 36"
Sockeye and Humpies ---(slow speed only)----25 to 31"

"We are talking wire line, weak plastic flashers,thick-skin 4 1/4" hoochies, with heavy mylar dress, and two 92533 4/0 hooks"....

WTF?????.....were you just on my boat???????

Supertackle hoochies are all "thick skin"............

I've been using Jack's leader recommendations for years now......and they still work for me.

Some flashers made today are much weaker than those "originals".

Thousands of people still use wire lines.

Even back in the seventies everybody knew that if you wanted big fish , you took the mylar twinkle skirt out of the hoochy. I never fished a twinkle-skirt in a hoochy for 15 years after that.

Hoochies are pretty versatile........you can fish 'em slow or fast.
I find faster works good for hoochies.

But even Jack, in his 70's book, said that his hoochy lengths were only guidelines and that one needed to play around a bit to find what works in a particular area or on a given day.

Hoochy design hasn't changed much over the years...except for when, in the 90's they brought out this hoochy that looked like a baitfish.

It was a good idea but needed improvement and they didn't catch on.....

Hoochy makers have made thinner skinned hoochies.....but the thick-vinyl type still abound.

Makers like Yozuri and GoldenBait tend to have the best eyes on them.
You buy a pack of 5 hoochies, you get 5 good ones.

Certain other brands (**cough**) do a bad job on the eyes frequently.
Not much glow on the eyes and also a tiny pin-prick of black for the pupil.

You buy a pack of 5 , you get 4 that are crap-looking.

The hoochies with better eyes IMO outfish the hoochies with poorly produced eyes.

You don't always need a deathroll on a hoochy......if you did, thousands of guys wouldn't have bothered fishing hoochies behind a dodger....which gives it a side to side twitch and not a roll......

Neither would they have fished hoochies in Crazy8 rigs........

Enough said. You just proved that there is still old fellas around who know how to drag a bucket behind the boat. LOL
Using waterlogs, Nootkas and Abe n Als is real old school? You still use wire line on a bamboo rod with rollers? Cool! And I still have that and a boat with a bronze propeller shaft. But I still prefer mooching in the clinker.

Naaah....I was just kidding....

I'm not quite old enough that I got to use the bamboo pole with rollers, Monel steel line, and a 6lb ball on the end of it for weight.

However I have gone fishing in a clinker-built rental powered by a Briggs &Stratton in Brentwood Bay.

I have also used Nootka flashers...

Got out this evening with Bart and jeffywestcoast. It was a great night out on the water and was nice to meet Jeff again after quite a few years. We got lots of bs'ing and fishing in. Marked a few bait balls on the sounder and managed a couple of twin 8 lbers. A few shakers as well. Not many boats out at all. There were two fishing the deep water and couple of others at Neck and thats it for that area.

The twins.

Bart looking for the gold lol. Beauty sky's this evening.

Might try it again tomorrow evening.

Cheers,
John

Good stuff! Thanks Again John! I Had a blast and you and Bart are quality Fishermen and the Mighty Sculpin is an absolutely amazing machine without a doubt!

Oh, just noticed they are not twins lol. Send that head in which ever one of you got the hatch job.

I bought a Silva Bay Derby ticket a month or so ago from RVP at PNT. I can't fish the derby this weekend as I am heading out West finally! I might win something anyway and the money is for a good cause.

Sorry Demco99 when someone with a boat that catches alot of fish takes you fishing, i tend to keep my lips sealed on depths, lures, location type stuff, if it was out of my own boat i wouldn't hesitate to let you know but if i want to get invited out again i think revealing stuff is not the proper thing to do.

No big deal Jeff. I don't care one way or the other :).

Pretty much same old same old Nick. Irish cream and kitchen sink spoons, glow green flashers, 120' in 200 feet of water. Might try the deep water tonight.
