Mystery Rope?

Folks,

Can you help me identify this rope? I wanted to splice some eyes into it, but when I had a closer look at it, i could not figure out what the heck it was. I even took it down to Trotac and Trevor didn't know what it was or how to splice it.

It is 12 strands, and seems to be grouped into 4 groups of 3 strands each.

If you know what it is, can your also tell me if it can be splices. It is made of nylon, but other than that, I have no idea what it is. It came off a Columbia River anchoring setup that came with my boat. If I can use it, great, no sense in throwing it out.

12 Strand Rope - Is produced to provide significant improvement in performance, life expectancy and strength. Plaited 12 strand ropes have six right hand laid strands and six left hand laid strands which produces a
torque balanced rope. 12 Strand Ropes are easily spliced and offer greater abrasion resistance combined with higher strengths. Fibres can include Spectra, Polyester, Nylon and Dual Fibre Blend.

Yeah, I thought it was a typical 12 strand rope too, BUT...

It looks nothing like the weave of a standard 12 strand rope:12 strand.jpg

And when I compress it, it sort of unwinds rather than open up to expose a hollow centre which is essential for performing most splices on 12 strand rope.

Any other ideas?

I'd take the 3 bundles of 4strands each and back splice just like I was dealing with three strand. It looks more like 3-strand if you think of the 4-strand bundles as a strand - no?

Good idea, but there are 4 groups of 3, and not 3 groups of four. Bummer hey? I did some more research and I am wondering if I can treat it as a 4 strand line and do a Flemish eye splice. If I can, that would be great because that is a pretty easy splice to do.

I have never seen a line like this, but what really blew me away was that Trevor at Trotac had never seen one like it either!

Taper the end of the line about 10-12" by removing some strands, then 5-6" toward the end remove some more. Wrap the end with electrical tape. Using a 18" tail and a fid, poke the working end through the middle of the standing part 3 times, remove the tape, then very tightly lash/bind the tail to the standing part with some black 3 strand tarred seine twine, rather than trying to get it up the middle of the rope. Tie the line to a tree, put the eye over your trailer ball and pull on it with your truck to see if the lashing slips and needs re-doing. Tape over the lashing to make a smooth running eye. That's what I would do.

Also melt the end to keep it under control.

Saw something like it a long time back. I think it was called Euro strand but it was much thicker and used as a towline.

Polypropylene 12 strand, easy to tie, holds knots well, camping, hiking, mildew resistant and not affected by water or oil. Ideal for marine use. Generally made off shore.

I tried undoing the rope by isolating each of the four strands, but it seems they are woven together. So it cannot be treated as 4 strand. Bugger. I will look at it tomorrow and see that f I can isolate individual strands / yarns. If I can, maybe it can be treated as 12 strand.
