My personal favorite rod on a downrigger...

My favorite rod on a downrigger is a HARDY Ten Ten. I love the old school power and parabolic curve and the great battle action. I do also like the HARDY 10ft Mooching rod too, but it's a little light action compared to the Ten Ten for the way I fish. I have few old school PEETZ rods that I like too. I am just uncertain what model they are, one is 7ft and the other is 8ft. They are OG yellow Lamiglas though.

What's your number one choice in a mooching rod and why?

I agree with you about the Hardy rods. I have several of the 10 foot versions. Most of them have Islander MR3’s on them, but one of them wears an original old school Hardy Longstone on it. The flex on these rods is absolutely classic, bending right to the cork. The nice slow and steady action makes it virtually impossible to rip the hook out of the fish during violent head shakes. The rod simply absorbs the shaking. You can feel the fish fart at fifty feet.
They have incredible power, capable of landing much bigger fish than normally anticipated. A couple of years ago we were dragging bottom looking for springs in about 100 feet of water off Nootka. Suddenly one rod almost got ripped out of the holder in an absolutely violent display of power. It was all I could do to hold on. The fish turned out to be a halibut of at least 100 pounds which was of course released. Can’t even begin to count the number of Tyees and several 40+ lb Springs, a lot of which were similarly released, that have been brought boat side by those rods. The Hardy’s are still going strong and will probably outlast me.
I have never felt under gunned when using those rods.

I love the old technium 15-25 mh rods. Loads of backbone but super sensitive. I just picked up 2, 7' peetz rods, that are close to medium action. I'll bring them down to the shop Robert so you can check them out!
Thanks Mike, I know the ones. I have run both the med and med hvy for a number of years. One of the best production rods ever. I have sold hundreds of them over the years.

A little secret not many know but if your ok with a longer rod ... the 11'-6" pin rod by Amundson is such a nice rod to play fish on CM2116M which can be had for fairly cheap .....
Sage 3106 or 4100
Mike have my 12' Harrisons need you to rebuild for me .......

It's not truly a secret. That was developed by coming very close to copying the RAVEN IM6. I was the first BC rep for RAVEN, then woo'd over to Amundson becoming their first BC rep. I liked my RAVEN so much that I pushed to base that rod off the IM6. This said it didn't turn out as I expected. The RAVEN was better overall. The Amundson is still a very good rod. I believe they stopped making it after I left their sales team.

there still showing it on there web site..... when Alex C was there i ended up with 6 of them , i still have 3 which i was going to let go but had no takers so my end up using them one day ... using the new Moocher X but the guides are not for everyone and the fore grip is a little too busy other than that the blank is a good 10-6" medium

You have the newer version. The one I worked on in the same model number had the standard SIC lower profile guides that you see on most mooching rods. It also had a standard cork grip and set reel seat. Closer to traditional style mooching rod.

I was looking at those West Coast 10’6 rods, with the metal reel seat. Reel gets tightened from the bottom and the top cork comes right down to the reel which I like. Anyone tried them?

It is modeled after the RCR that I designed a number of years ago with some slight differences. James asked me if they could copy it when I was working at PNT. I said fill your boots, as I'd had no connection to RCR other than designing and specing five rods for the BC
market for RCR specifically. I still have and use the prototype RCR rods. RCR had already gone out of business at that point.
