I've been getting really into the mooching game in the salt. Yes, downriggers are more effective, but as a reformed fly angler, I want to make things as hard as possible for myself, while still retaining some remote percentage of success
If you have a Sage Gear SA3106, I'd like to ask a big favor from you. Would you be able to take a picture of the rod profile with a 2oz weight attached to the tip? Pretty please?
The SA3106 is broadly considered one of the best mooching rod blanks ever made. The problem is - they're super hard to come by. Sage was doing small batch runs, and selling them directly to a shop in Vancouver for resale - but that stash has been depleted. Sage is way backordered for their current model blanks - so, I'm guessing it'll be a long wait until they cook up another batch of these old graphite blanks - if ever!
I got bored and decided to see which current model blanks match up well with the characteristics of the SA3016. The SA is described as having a soft tip, with stiffness increasing towards the butt section. That sound right? From what I've read - the key with mooching - is to perceive the slight lift of the rod tip as the bait is descending - so a soft / sensitive tip is clutch?
I realize this is a pretty ridiculous request - but i'm dying to know what the rod profile of the SA30106 or SA4110 looks like. Would you be able to set-up a similar brace and measure how far the tip drops when you add a 2oz weight to the tip? A picture of straight and weighted will at least help me match up the parabola characteristics.
This will help me determine whether a modern soft blank like the Sage Pulse switch (graphite) is a closer match - OR, whether the ultra stiff modern blanks such as the Method or Igniter would be a better use fit.
Once I have this info - then I can select the blank and build up a modern mooching rod.
Ohhhhhhhh the weird **** we occupy our time with during this covid fiasco!
Oh, and sorry if my buck wild wallpaper and color palate offends anyone. I'm eclectic af and 33% crazy. It makes me happy...
