Mr3 Creep fix

Thunder 21, I stopped cranking down on the drag and just run another clip off the downrigger to stop the creep. I'm fishing on the bottom at the hwy in 300 feet of water and have my downrigger down at 400 feet because of the blow back and have my drag set perfect for fighting a salmon.

I will try and send a picture of my set up if I get time tomorrow so you can see it.

The discussion was about line creep on Islanders, not meat lines using Avet's or any other kind of star drags boys.

I just saw this on someone's boat, and it's genius. The best part is that your drag is set perfectly on your reel, and the additional release clip stops the creep if it bothers you. I just don't get an irritating amount of creep, and love my made-in-BC Islanders.
Buy local!!!

I have seen that method before on a buddies boat. It worked pretty slick. If mine were still an issue it is something I would consider.

I fished my MR3 last week in Haida Gwaii and was reminded again how good the drag is. Fish pauses after a run, maybe a bit of head shaking - you just hover your hand over the reel waiting for it to run. The drag will hold it and you don't get your knuckles shredded. You know if it runs, you don't have to palm the reel because the drag is so reliable. Double header and need to switch sides? Or need hand the rod around an obstacle if the fish takes an odd run forward? No problem, you can easily take a hand off because the drag is so good.

So much is made of a bit of line creep, but that only happens while you're waiting for a bite. The reel's main function comes with a fish on, and the MR3 is superb when that happens. I've landed plenty of fish with Shimanos and level winds, but nothing has the buttery smooth drag of an Islander.

sly_karma; great post. After all it's a mooching reel right? Works as designed/advertised. After hook-up I adjust my Shimano just so it won't free-spool. I feel that way the head shaking is just about eliminated.

well have a buddies one season old MR3
little use prob 20 hrs
and it keeps backing off set the drag and it back's off to almost a free spool (birds nest)
either the spring is ***** or the bearing is pressed in to far ..... washer is there under the drag
locking screw is fine so whats gives .........

I've seen and used that method too, but I don't bother anymore. My MR3 seems to creep for maybe 1 - 1.5 turns and then it stays put, same with most of the others I've used on charters and friends' boats. If you have the reel set up and maintained correctly, line creep is a very minor issue and not worth worrying about. I know there's a position that says "a $600 reel better be absolutely perfect and shouldn't creep even one millimetre," but my position is we're out on the water to get away from first world problems and nitpicking. God knows fishing is not at all an exact science.

bearing for sure. i had the same problem with my MR3

I had a mr3 on my boat when I purchased it. I didnt buy it or have any interest in buying one. I've oiled the cork 3 times, taken it completely apart. Now I just reach over and scoop a handful of Vaseline on it..... No more creep and not more lock UPS. No more maintenance as the Vaseline doesn't wash away and...... The drag actually worked while in nootka this year. If your spending tons of money doesn't it make sense that you wouldn't need to do all this maintenance? But the more money the more maintenance seems to be the deal. This is why some people really like like shimanos and so forth.

I am of two minds on this and see merit to both arguments.

That being said, just returned from having two days on the highway off Bamfield catching multiple springs in the mid twenties on plugs with an older MR2
I had serviced the reel myself before the trip and recently had a new bearing put in.
It worked flawlessly. Sometimes there was a bit of creep, no issue, I either pulled another length of line from the reel or touched the drag knob.
My buddy was literally in the same boat with the same reel and the same results.

When the spring hit the plug, popped the clip and ran flasherless towards the boat, both of us were just thrilled to be able to keep up with our reels.

Other times the fishing has been slow and the bearing on my 15 year old islander had crapped out and I was looking at other reels online during my coffee breaks.
