Motors With BIG Hours

I had a used 1999 Honda 130hp that ended up with over 3000 hrs on it after using it for 21 yrs.

The engine finally died due to cooling system corrosion (too expensive to fix) but the motor was still running perfectly.

I agree it is non use that is hard on a good quality outboard.
 
I sometimes wonder if they are still making them as good as they used to? New cars and trucks seem to be designed with planned obsolescence and impossible for the average person to work on. Are outboards still built to be repaired and last? To my uneducated eye there does not seem to be all that much technological advancement in outboards - beyond fly by wire maybe, or is there? Did I just completely derail this thread?

That’s a valid point. I’m fairly confident we get a lot more life out of these newer 4 strokes than the old 2 strokes with proper maintenance
