Monofiliment Line Dilema

X 2 on 30# Ande or Big Game.

Maxima is too expensive, only for leaders only me.

Well the way it is looking I am leaning to Ande for sure. Green colored is my color choice. Now the choice is either Tournament or Premium? I am not sure that I want to go up to 30lb, but trying to decide between 20lb and 25lb. Like I said before my main fishing with my reels at the moment is Gerrard Rainbows which can run all the way up to 30lbs. I have never broke off one yet with 20lb test (touch wood), but may make a trip or two down salmon fishing. Any suggestions on 20lb or 25lb?

I used the 20# ande for years with no problems, just make sure you use good quality swivels to minimize line twist. I use 25# max now but only because i got a great deal on it and I do some guiding in the charlottes so a little extra umph doesn't hurt. I read about some people on here using 40# mainline and it just blows me away, I don't get it. I also still do a bit of power mooching so I prefer the smaller line. it's pretty darn hard to break off a big fish with 20# mainline imho. I still have some 20# ande from a big spool over 15 yrs old and it still looks good. I have 25 on some reals and 20 on some

Thanks nicat. I switch all of my swivels to ballbearings wherever I can. I even take the bead chains off of my Apex hockey sticks and use ballbearings there as well. It might be overkill somewhat, but it reduces any line twisting for me at least. My biggest Gerrard Rainbow 28lb 6 oz was actually caught on 17lb Silverthread, so I think 20lb can handle just about anything. I have always said that it is not how heavy the gear you have, but how smart you play your fish. Many 70lb Springs have been taken on 20lb mono in Port Hardy.

actually a fiend of mine caught a 58# spring at qcl quite a few years ago on an 9wt fly rod ( not sure what # test it was, maybe 12) 3 of us guides were out fishing the day after guiding the mark messier catch classic at the lodge, was quite the battle, lol there was a ctually a story about it in the sportfishing bc mag.

Beauty!!! So why is he looking so pissed- off ?????

(so not to hijack totally.. I have used Maxima for as long as I can remember. But now I had a fishing buddy convince me to try braid with a 60ft topshot. When I changed out the 80lb braid on one of my hali reels, I reversed the braid onto a GT4000, with the top shot. Seems fine-- but so far I dont notice much difference-- but I didnt connect with any monsters this year either. )

Now there's a brute. I am still looking to break the 30lb club. Have come close with my Gerrard Rainbow, but not salmon yet. Sturgeon well that was easily done.
