my podded 16' silver streak open challenger came with a 50hp merc. after about a year of ownership i find the 50 to be underpowered. the boat is rated for 50-70 and the original owner did the pod (plus an arch, and looks like it was done at the factory), so it's a bigger heavier boat than stock, with more floatation at the pod.
anyhow i'm comparing 70 motors, but i see that only yami makes a 70 as such. it's the highest end of a range at 255lbs dry. then merc and suzi make 75's and they are at the lowest end of ranges with more hp. they are each 350 pounds.
does that make the yami a clear standout given the weight? some guys seem to think it's a drawback to have a motor at the high end of it's hp range but someone else said yeah but it's a yami. so not really comparing apples to apples with this one and not sure how to look at it. i prefer the idea of lighter all day, but not sure what the right approach is.
