Just got back from 10 days in Maui. Talked to an older guy who was casting from shore. He was using a rig that they call an Australian slider. They use a long rod with a level line for casting. The neat thing is they only cast the weight out, the bait is on a rig that has a coiled end. The rig is then put on the mainline and it slides down to the weight. The casts are much longer with the weight alone and the bait suffers much less impact. You do not need a license to fish there. The old timer told me they tried to introduce license fees but residents refused. He also told me the turtle population was down to less than 100 not too long ago. The government banned all killing of turtles and implemented a $25000.00 fine. The turtle population is back. Someone in the fisheries dept. decided it was a good idea to introduce a Yellow fish which was not native to Hawaii but was good eating and multilplied rapidly. Unfortunatley this Yellow fish also eats the eggs of the really prized native fish. I have learned the stupidity is not only in B.C.

Two months ago I was at North Kona on Big Island for 11 nights with the wife and kids. You can see Maui almost from where we were. I went on a fishing charter with Captain Jeff Rogers, the best guide in Hawaii. He holds all the records. Our trip was okay, we got into 9 or so yellow fin tuna, had a big hit that released on the big game gear but never stuck, did some bottom fishing picked up an amber jack. A few weeks after our trip Captain Jeff lands a "grander". Marlin weighed in at 1056 lbs! What a story, at the boat this huge Marline start to get eaten by 3 oceanic whitetip sharks!!! Got to read this story and see the pictures.. Wish it were me on that trip!

Probably going back there next year.. Defiantly fishing it again..

At our resort, the beach had lots of sea turtles around.. got to snorkel near them. They are amazing. At the marina when we got back from our charter. Our captain was cleaning the yellow fin tuna for us, and these huge sea turtles would come from under the boats to eat the scraps... I took a bunch of pictures of them..

I heard that they are implementing regulations in Hawaii.. some reading about it here..
