Seems like nothing more than creative money grab to me. What is the difference between this and sending a bill to every commercial car/truck owner (taxi, pizza delivery van etc.) because they may require a fire truck with rescue equipment one day to come out and cut them out of a wreck or provide more centerline concrete barriers to keep them safe on the roads . What are all those federal taxes we already pay for anyway, besides sending our Fisheries minister on a trip to Norway to kiss Fish Farm executives backsides?

I guess anyone in the charter business who already donates money directly to the CCG in appreciation for services in their particular area are really going to be pissed. And what if I choose to give $200.00 directly to the CCG so that 100% of the money reaches where it should? Is that a credit that exempts me from the fee?...ya right. Promise to keep Sheringham Light up and running in its present diminished capacity and I'll consider paying. Carry on with the planned decommission and forget it. I think BIGWAVEDAVE deserves $200 before the CCG does.
The next thing will be Fisheries wanting $200.00 from us charter guys for their enforcement services. That works out to $100.00 for each of the 2 friendly chats I have with someone from DFO each year.

The only reason we are getting those bills is it is dead easy to identify the charter operators because we all have "C" numbers and complete annual self inspections...so they know who we are. I wouldn't have an issue with it if EVERY boat owner got the same bill. The only way they could really treat all fairly would be to tax the boat gas...that way everyone who is on the water (even visiting boats) would pay their fair share. This whole thing is B.S.

Searun, don't suggest another tax as it will only go to general revenue and the ccg will never see a penny of it. They still won't have enough funding to carry out there mandate from the government of the day.

Done a little research and in order for the CG to bill anyone for "cost recovery" they have to justify it with a study and consultation process. The justification used to bill small vessel operators is based on a study done in 1998 with the shipping industry. I don't think that this will NOT past muster if scrutinized by your member of Parliament and could lead to this getting shot down in short order.
To be clear , this 200.00 bucks is not for Search and Rescue it is for aids to navigation and radio services. I will guarantee you that if they get away with this one you will see other charges for search and rescue etc etc in the years to come.

What burns me about this "tax" on small commercial boats is that it is another charge on people doing honest business while the under the table industry walks away once again.</u>

Lets get organized on this one. Don't be a lay down.

Once again after the lack of inforcement that was done on illegal charter operators this past year....why would anyone accept this charge.
I'm legit so I pay but the illegal guy just keeps his money and continues to operate.
Not likely .......

Guess who won't be paying this fee?? Commercial Fishing boats!!!!

The Marine Navigation Services Fee (MNSF) was officially introduced by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on June 1, 1996 as a user fee for navigational services provided by the Canadian Coast Guard. Subsequently revised on July 1, 1997, and again on October 1, 1998, the MNSF is assessed on all vessels operating in Canadian waters with the exception of fishing vessels, "government ships" and pleasure craft as defined by the MNSF Fee schedule. It was also decided that, effective October 1, 1998, the existing fee structure would be frozen (i.e. unchanged) for three years. Responses to questions below are based on provisions contained in the "Fee Schedule – Fees to Be Paid For Marine Navigation Services Provided By the Canadian Coast Guard" effective October 1, 1998.

Everyone needs to write their MP on this one right away!!See the previous page for email addresses.

Thanks for the backgrounder Charlie, but in Canada we actually believe(foolishly or not) that "we the people" control the government not visa versa.

I just spoke with a DFO contact who thinks this may be a donation form in invoice format to get as much $ as possible donated.

I can't Fax my invoice to her until the afternoon as I have no fax here.

Can someone fax a copy to her with your contact number so she can tell if it is such?

Att. Joelle. Fax 250) 363-6565.

Thanks.

Definately not a donation form Tailspin. If you received the invoice you are required to pay.

This is a open attack on the marine tourism industry in B.C. All commercially registered boats under 5 tonnes , watertaxis ,salvage, whalewatchers , eco tourist operations and sportfishing operations will be receiving this invoice.$200.00 per boat!!!!(with the exception of boat rental operations) Commercial fishermen , government boats and pleasure boats are completely exempt.

Once again tap out an email to your MP (addresses are on page 2 of this thread)and tell them the crap our industries have been through in the last 2 years. This is a tax grab plain and simple.
