Making Your Own Needlefish Spoons?.....

The pic below has a Coyote -type spoon at top.......notice the curve design ...this is standard on many sport spoons.

The pic below it shows a design that is incorporated into many commercial spoons.....it has equal "dish" at both ends.

When you grind one of these old commy spoons down to a needlefish profile...it will swim with more wiggle because of the "equal dish " design.

If you grind an old Coyote down to make it needlefish profile....it will still swim like a Coyote because of the design.

Something to consider when you are thinking of trying to make needlefish spoons in the basement.

I often double up my needlefish hoochies to make them larger. Seems to be what a common goal in these Threads on needlefish spoons. Bigger is better.

I'd agree with that, I find most needlefish I find in bellies are bigger then the standard squirt - a 6 incher would be ideal IMO.

Yes....I meant taking a fatter body spoon with that design and grinding the sides down to give it a narrower needle profile.

I have done that myself.

If you take a FLAT piece of metal and cut out a narrow-profile spoon and bend it into an S-shape it will not swim as well as the spoon with the equal-curved dish at both ends.

I've used needlefish hoochies too before........but I like using spoons as well.

Spoons you can use by themselves......but hoochies you pretty well have to always use a flasher or dodger.

From time to time I discover places where they have a box of old commy spoons for sale.......and I pick out the ones as I described for future use.

Generally the commy spoons are heavier gauge........which is ok because when you narrow them they are still pretty strong.

Not to take anything away from Nog....but if you look at his spoon you will see it has that doubledish styling.....his of course probably is top of the foodchain for maximum lifelike action.... but if you are making them yourself like I do, it is an important feature.

yes...Brian Francis at Magic Lure in Port Alberni has those.

he's got a lot of the old Pal dies........you can get Pal spoons from him still.

He's about 35 minutes from where I live.

His website does not show much...but you go there and there's spoons/jigs hanging all over the place.

Not knocking any members attempts at making their own needlefish tackle.......just thought I'd point out the spoon thing.

Coyotes tend to "wobble" whereas the doubledish spoons "wiggle'.

Andrew P's spoons look hot...and you'll notice his are dished metal...not flat.

I made up a few 6 inch needlefish spoons from stainless steel - they are similar to Iron Noggins design. Very simple to make. I used 2000 grit sand paper and Mothers metal polish - they shine like chrome. I have only had a chance to try the green and glow spoon so far - works great on coho.
