lings and rock fish

Newfisherman, each area that you are fishing will have different regulations.. these regulations tend to change from year to year... The (regs) regulations can be a little difficult to read and understand at first until you get used to them... and some area's have complete closures and protected areas which never open..
So its very important to figure where exactly these closures are and where your fishing...

The other thing to mention is...

Its a good idea to familirize yourself with the different species of Rock fish, Lingcod, greenlings etc.. each have a specific age at which they reproduce, and sometimes they need to be quite old to become mature enough to spawn...
Also in most cases taking the largest rock fish or Lingcod isnt the best eating, but they have the best reproduction abilities... So taking medium siezed bottom fish isnt a bad idea, rather than the monsters...
This helps to ensure that rockfish and other bottom fish have a chance to flurish and not get depleated in your fishing area...

Lots of info for you in the Saltwater Regs and online as mentioned earlier...
Good luck....

Ive heard some guys were using upside down weighted milk crates to force the rock fish bad down to the bottom, thus equalizing the pressure agian...then retreiving the crate... Apparently it works... I have my doubts..

Better than not trying

big lake trout are hard to get back to the bottom. There are wire rigs that can be use to hook the fish and take it to the bottom with the downrigger and once you stop lowering the rigger then the fish can swim off. The wire hooks through the back of the gill plate. once you stop lowering the fish can swim off.

thanks all I need to get something to lower the fish to the bottom. I don't like to fish for rock fish but all my buddies like it. just want to keep some alive.
