Key Points/Highlights from the South Coast Recreational Creel Bulletin September 2021:
1. Overall, there have been absolutely NO reductions in Chinook mortality.
- In fact there has actually been a 12% increase in recreational mortality if we apply a 20% post-release mortality rate to the estimated 231,824 Chinook that were released.
2. There have been significant increases in recreational effort, retention and release of Chinook in areas where DFO approved Pilot Recreational openings this year.
-PFMA 13 - 24% increase in recreational mortality in 2021 relative to the 5 year average and 10% increase in effort.
-PFMA 15 - 20% increase in recreational mortality in 2021 relative to the 5 year average; there was actually a 17% reduction in effort
-PFMA 16 - 50% increase in recreational mortality in 2021 relative to the 5 year average; there was a 10% increase in effort
3. There have been decreases in the total number of Coho kept and released in 2021 relative to the 5 year average.
However some areas experienced significant increases in coho recreational mortality (i.e., PFMAs 23, 123 and 28) while other areas saw significant reductions in coho recreational mortality (i.e., PFMAs 13, 14, 20, 29).
4. There have been increases in recreational mortality on Halibut and Lingcod
-Overall there has been a 7% increase in halibut kept in 2021 relative to the recent 5 year average
-Overall there has been a 20% increase in Lingcod kept in 2021 relative to the recent 5 year average
-Overall, there has been a 2% reduction in the number of rockfish kept in 2021 relative to the recent 5 year average.
