so , did sum playin around on some lite jigging rods i just purchased this week, loaded one of them up with 20lb Power Pro Braid,
watch a little WFN now and then , notice alot of outfits using braid for the same purpose ,

I`m having a problem with my knots i think , i broke off a few 2-3 ounce jigs a few times, hooked ground lightly couple of times, after a few medium strikes to release , gone!! little too easy i thought...any of you have any advise.. knot type ??
the other rod with mono held up fine...

what a rush hooking into a bucket with light gear....good times..

thx in advance

I would recommend using a short top-shot of 50# mono (say 8 - 10'). We use power pro exclusively from everything from our salmon/steelhead rods and downrigger line, to our big rigs down south for marlin and tuna etc. Braid will break very easily if it's chaffed, particularly 20#, and tying directly to the jig w/o a mono top-shot increases your chances for chafing the braid on a fish's teeth, the reef, etc.

Tie a 12 turn bimini in the braid, and use a modified albright knot to attach a short top-shot of mono to the braid. This is going to make it much easier for you to grab the "leader", fish around rocks/reefs, and not worry about a big ling's teeth cutting the braid. Good luck!

Check out the Knot Wars feature at the North American Fishing Club web site. They test dozens of knots with several different line types to determine best performance. There's tying instructions for all the knots as well.

F.D. I jig for halibut often with light spinning gear. I use 30 lb. braid (Power Pro or Stealth). I use the Palomar knot to tie to a #1 or #1/0 swivel c/w quick change and use either 30 lb. or 40 lb. Maxima mono or flourocarbon leader (also with Palomar knots) to my jig. I like the two wraps of line to the jig, it helps prevent line wear at the knot. I am using either 3 oz. or 5 oz. Pirken jigs I make myself. With this setup myself and friends have caught lots!! of halibut 20 to over 60 lb. the last few years. There is little trouble with breaks either on fish or when getting stuck on the bottom. Most of the jigging is when on anchor during soft current.

How does 50 lb Power Pro work in the Scotty downrigger clips compared to 30 mono?
Is it best to use a 30 ft topshot of mono when trolling?

You definitely want to put a 100-200' top-shot of mono on top of the braid, 30-50# will work fine. The braid twists far too easily, and the mono will take care of that. You'll never get spooled again with all that braid back there!

x2 - scotty clips won't hold braid well, so a tag line of mono does the trick. I only use about 50 feet of mono, and the new Suffix 832 super braid.

For bottom fishing, pretty much what Rob H said. Tie in a swivel with a palomar and add 3 feet of 40# mono. I use 30# power pro and never break off on light cod tackle.
As for on the downrigger, I've had no problems with the scotty clips holding 30# power pro so long as you notch the clip to the tighter setting. It won't hold on the loser setting.

[again , thx for the knowledge boys...

will try the short tag ( leader ) makes sense , some of those jigs i use have a fairly thin eye wire , that could cause excessive pinching ?? who knows..

Pat,,, interested in ur 50 foot tag of mono on ur trollers , what kindof connection are you applying between the braid n mono , if its a swivel , is it not hard on your guides when it passes through , or , possible tangles on your reel when coming off when sending her down ???

thx

Felix

I personally run the 20lb braid on my calcutta and my spinning reels for jigging. i love the stuff. i have lost jigs from tieing directly to the jog because most jigs i found had enough of a bur or some paint left over to chafe at the line. mono sinches down so snug it doesnt move around much. where as the braid can still slip back and forth. just coming from my experience, i now tie about a 2-4' section of mono

Ditto-when tying the knot I double the braid makes it a bit more of a PITA to tie but gives me more to work with.

As to light line jigging 30# is as light as I'll go now lost too much gear with 20#.

A long mono top shot defeats the purpose of braid for jigging but is fine for trolling. The metal loop style downrigger clips work well with braid because they don't rely on the line thickness as part of the release tension. Does anyone in BC fish with them??

I use a spider hitch for a double line in the braid and a three turn surgeon's knot ("triple surgeon's" but it's only 1.5 surgeon's) from leader to braid loop. I can have broken main line to a new leader tied on in 30s. The best thing about the surgeon's is the thick tag end of the mono leader is aligned up the line so the knot slides out the guides real easy for casting / last ditch fish runs at the boat. I usually start with a leader the length of the rod and then retie when it's only 3 feet long.

Black's clips are rare here probably because they need to part of the whole downrigger line not clipped on anywhere like standard clothespin rigs.

Walker was trying to market them here but like all their efforts in BC it went nowhere.
