Sounds like area 2B (BC) 6.9 million pounds.

"Who would have ever thought it would be this much fun catching them one at a time"

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. IPHC is managing halibut, and I don't think there have ever been more of them, Hali fishing just seems to be better and better. Just means that, especially on the West side, guys are going to have to spend time targetting quality fish, instead of throwing random jigs at 5 pounders on the banks.

At least there will always be halibut to catch at this rate, look at Salmon. You are lucky to catch one or two a day during the summer, it wasn't that long ago that they figured 8 a day was OK.

This was just the scientific recomendation. It doesn't mean the Canadian contingent of the conferance board will accept it in Jan. at the meetings.

Jackel, I figured you of all people would apreciate a move that would favour the guys who have taken the time to learn how to target quality fish! Would really change the playing field for the guys who have taken the time to learn how to target inshore fish, versus the rest of the fleet who runs 30 miles to throw jigs in 400ft of water for 5 pounders. From a business standpoint, I think it may be better for seasoned guides with established clientel.

It will be easier on fuel, more comfortable for the guests, and sure a lot better looking at the table with 3 or 4 big ones that one would need two hands to hold up, not 10 of them that would fit in a 50 lite beer cooler.

Ah well, guess I'm alone on this opinion.

We are ALL going to lose doesnt matter if your a charter/guide/weekend warrior we are all in the same boat I still dont understand why there isnt an annual limit for halibut EVERYTHING else there is but not Hali?????????????
If you went to the meeting at esq you would have gotten all the info you wanted 7 sport rec guys and over 30 charter guys were there not a good rep from the sport sector time to wake up or we will loose it all as **** flows downhill and we are on the bottom looks very bleak for 09 be prepared!!!!!!

Annual limit may help somewhat, but how many sporties really take more then 10 or so a year? Where I fish, it's guide boats every day, with guests who maybe come once a year.

Well I can tell you SOME sport fisherman notice I said "some" take way more than 10 a year just on the weekend a guy recongnized me on the ferry and came over to say hi and he told me him and his buddy alone caught over 40 halibut each off of vic/renny and he got his biggest ever of 3 over 80lbs I just shook my head and asked him how much halibut he really needed....we have to start and wake up and not feed every one on the block if you buy a liscence then you have the right to go fishing thats why we buy one.

But not for every tom.dick and harry on the street block that dont purchase a liscence thats why its called a daily personal limit "for your person".

If you want to give it away thats fine but dont keep going back and filling your own freezer and everyone else freezer thats not what the resource is for. we all know out there who does it we see them on a daily basis.

What was this BC take for this past season?

1.5 Million pounds. We were only supposed to take a little over a million, they (DFO) leased 230,000 pounds from DFO, but we went %50 over our quota as sporties.

The Toal TAC for BC was 9million pounds in 2008

Yes, but I was referring to what the Sporties caught in 2008.

True Wolf, there will allways be some, but for the most part, an annual limit won't put a dent in the Sport catch. Untill we can adjust our quota, which will cost a hell of a lot more money then is available, we are in for a rough ride.

Why does it have to cost us anything?
The commercial sector never payed a dime for their allowable catch...yes, some had invested interest in boats, gear, etc but so do we.
Times have changed and the sportfishing sector is generating a substancial tax base for the government and the tourism is a huge part of BC now more than ever.
The DFO should have to listen to the people on this one and simply allocate more recreational TAC for a while...simple.
The commercial sector could hardly complain. They had years to make sure that the revenue they have generated over the last little whle from their free quota should be well invested.
The ones that will complain are the ones that have borrowed equity against the inflated quota price and now fear they will lose...
Remember, it wouldn't be forever...Eventually the smaller halibut quota for commercials would drive some to go value added or search for niche markets that would be more sustainable in the future...
I can tell you that almost all the commercial quotas delivered are filtered through only a few buyer's now and that's not good for anyone.
I realize that some of what I say is a little cut and dry and it's only my opinion....
I say this is a forum for debate and this is where I stand as I've seen both sides of the coin....

I have attended the meetings and tried to follow the facts.
I still do not understand:
If the Sports sector has been over quota for the last 2 years and the Commercial sector has not reached their quota in 2 years... Then an adjustment to the allocation is a no brainer.

At the end of the day with the Sporties over and Commercial under there was still fish left uncaught in the total allowable catch. So what is the reason for adjusting our quota? What is stopping a reallocation of the numbers?

I am still for an annual limit and maybe some changes to the daily limit in areas with bigger fish in interest of preserving stocks for the future.

When Politics get in the way of common sence it is hard to understand.

Tips

So if my mathmatic Guess is correct, we will be shut down after about 750 000 lbs on the BC Coast in 09. That is going to be a real short season to say the least. June start, late September finish???

I am still perplexed as to how DFO makes there guesstimate on actual poundage taken by Sporties.

This is going to make a real bloody mess of things either way it comes out in the new year, annual limit or not. This whole thing is like weaving a wet worm up a wildcats butt. [xx(]

no kidding, This year my dad and grandfather and i made multiple trips to Port Hardy and Port Mcneil in search of halibut and salmon, and we only managed 7 Hali between us in 10 days fishing, we saw two fellows in 3 days catch about 25 they were passing them off to other boats who wernt having any luck. I think this is also where we have some issues! I thought it was ridiculos!

The recommondations ar going to stick guys plane and simple commercial have toooooo big of say (jimmy patterson) (b.c. packers etc) as I said **** flows down hill and we get it in the end this is about allocation you have to get that.

Kelly you got to look this isnt just for south island it is COASTWIDE you see it in renny all the time guys who sportfish who are there for a month going out getting there 2 a day with buddies so now just this alone 100 guys take 2 a day for say 10 days thats 2000 fish if there was a annual limit of only 10 you have now cut that in half and thats only 100 people start putting number of people int the thousands then we WILL meet our quota this is the only way.

so do you want to see an annual limit in place and fish for 11 months or a maybe a 2 month season and everyone running everywhere trying to fill up with as many fish they can get???
