Info on Port McNeil/Malcolm Island/Alert Bay

Hey all,

My wife and I are thinking of going from Comox to Port McNeil area late this week. We will be trailering our 19' campion and would like to do a little fishing, crabbing and prawning. I realize it is not the ideal time but we have the opportunity and we're gonna take it.

Any advice on accomodations and spots to try for fishing? It's our first time in the area but we have all the safety gear except radar. Something not too far out.

Thanks in advance.

alert bay is beautiful, and you will probably be the only people at the campsite... two years ago for the august long weekend there were only three sites occupied (including us!)

Do a search on thisforum theres a feq really good topics on the fishing information, and the locals are very helpful and open to share the info

People prawn frequently by the log booms in beaver cove - they also crab there further in near the creek.

I don't know what to tell you for fishing. We often get feeders at black bluff on the backside of malcolm so that is worth a shot. if you don't get em just keep trolling either direction. fish hold all along the island. I'd keep your gear near the bottom though - there are hali's all around there too.

There should be some hali's around. If the tides are slow enough, try white cliffs. if not, try drifting around the backside on some humps. and if you want to run a little further, you can try off georges bank - i prefer the SE end of the bank but they could be anywhere.

Hope that helps

Hi everyone... a timely topic for us too...
We're planning on heading up to the Port Mcnell/Port Hardy area in the next while also to get familiarized with the area. We'll be going by boat from Powell River... so anyone with suggestions about good marinas/docks for overnights would be appreciated.
Like Scooter, any help with fishing spots to try etc would also be appreciated... particularly, bottom fish/halibut...
Thanks in advance.

I've stayed at Alder Bay Resort 3 times. Easy access, launch, camping, nice dock, showers, freezer. Don't know when they open for the season. They have a website. It's on VI across from Alert Bay and 5-10 minutes by boat from Telegraph Cove. 8-9 miles from Donegal Head on Malcolm.

We love Alder Bay .. great people running the show..showers,moorage, freezers and anthing else they can do to accomodate you.. they will..!!
