Hydraulic Downriggers......

From what I know you cannot legally run hydraulic downriggers on a boat except:-

If the boat is an ex-commercial that used to have a license...or..

the boat is an existing commercial boat with a license.

A hydraulic system can easily handle d/balls of much greater weight than sport models such as Scotty or Cannon I believe.

And much more wire..........so you can get down deeper and stay there no problem.

Anybody know of a sport model that can compete witha hydraulic rig?

Know of any home-built plans to make one that can compete witha hydraulic?......I realize it would not be hydraulic but some other power source.....

Hey Hali,
do you have any pictures of them, curious to see how they operate

Hydraulics or electric's they are riggers.
As long as there is a break away system you are good to go....
Example...A release clip.
You a long as every person on board has a license you can fish as many rods as you like.

Hali Killer hmmm.....guess my "informed source" was not so informed....

ok...so guys that use hydraulic riggers on sports boats, are they adapting commercial models to work?

You wouldn't be powering them off an outboard.....how do you power 'em on a sporty?

I have pictures in a album but wouldnt have a clue how to put it onto a computer.its a commercial spool with a a aluminum pole set up. Like a comercial troller setup on a much smaller scale

I have a 4.3 merc. You run a hydraulic pump off the belts.electric clutch on the hydraulic pump so you just turn it off or on with the flick of a switch. And yes the are commercial gurdies.Power up and power down.way nicer to use than a scotty.
