I was in tofino last week and most of the guides were using 6-7 inch plugs. What is the best way to fish plugs? I remember a few years back one guide showed me to cut off the hook and the metal ring in the plug and then feed your line right thru the plug and then a bead and twin barbless trebles. Is this a good way? Any suggestions on what plugs to use in Tofino this coming week?

Skip the twin hooks and use one big 8/0 mustad (or equivalent) beak hook.

if you don't want to pull the pin, just cut the front ring off and tie to the metal loop left. Pull your not to the very top of the loop and make sure it is straight down the middle.

When you are running the plugs put them 30-100 feet behind your downrigger. The longer the lead from the rigger the more side to side action you will get and the more water you will cover.

I start trolling them at around 3mph and go all the way to 6mph - the idea is to cover water and get aggresive fish to hammer them. At high speeds and with a 100 feet of lead those plugs will go 50' side to side, thus covering a huge plane of water. Just don't run two plugs at the same depth with this lengthe of lead or you'll tangle at even the smallest turn.

Pull the pin! Best way EVER to fight a fish. Once you get a big spring on with nothing but the free sliding plug, you'll never go back.

I use to use plugs allot I pulled the pin and used tandom 5/0 single hoohs.Worked great for me.
