The question about killer whales was purely hypothetical to see if you had a more difficult time with the idea of killing something we all admire. Unlike seals which we as fishermen have less tolerance of.

Yeah I know where you were coming from on that question and it does make one think.

What is the penalty for shooting a surfacing seal that may be tracking your boat for some distance or say the whole family. Usually when you see one there's three because with all the problems with fish and returns and the inshore fishing this year people may very well take out some anger on the poor innocent seals. How about NewFoundland God bless those boys, they have a seal hunt for pelts could be a profitable way to help boost economy and do some damage control on a pest species like seals. I am familiar with the practices of the East Coast Boys and they have evolved a lot they don't chase them across the ice anymore and bash them in the head with homemade clubs but instead shoot them in a more humane way. I think it could be good for tax revenues and sales of hunting equipment and also they facilities to support a annual seal hunt like fur processing and such....CHEERS[8D][}:)]

Ok, we'll end the argument about a seal cull and I'll say lets have a seal cull. It won't do squat to save the salmon. Did they wipe out their more traditional food supply...ie rock cod and ling cod...NO. Did they take herring stocks (another seal staple) to the brink? Pilchards? I could go on and on. If saving salmon is the true motive than look elsewhere..in fact go look in a mirror...that is the answer. I truly believe most want to kill seals only because some of them have learned to follow us around for an easy meal.

Well guys its been a slice but I've invited people over for a dinner party tonight and now, after parking my butt in front of the computer all morning I have to help the old lady get ready for my party so in the famous words of a seal-loving *******, give peace a chance

I hope you guys did not take offense to that last post my humour is a little rough around the edges;). But I do believe a seal hunt in order to balance out the harmony of the ocean could very well be a short-term cure to the over population of the species any species gets over-populated and disease and other natural ways to take care of the problem arise and thats the last thing we need. Plus with no real predators around the seal population will quadrouple again just as fast as they are hunted, so give out quotas and let the games begin. With a hunt properly managed it could really do some good in a broad view and it just so happens that I do enjoy hunting aswell:)

Bingo! Except for very specific circumstances like the puntledge river a seal cull is last thing we should worry about.

Good to see you may have understood my point with Profisher and agree with a cull in certain situations. My support of a cull is wen its necessary, just as you say here.

I don't have a problem with specific terminal culls, as Poppa mentions. With that cull, you KNOW you are eliminating the CULPRIT seals only! If done say at the Puntledge every fall the numbers killed would drop off yearly as they get wise quite fast. In a few years they would stop showing up. But randomly killing seals out in the ocean isn't the fix for all the reason already explained.

I'm glad you see it my way Hootey. LOL

Been sitting on the sideline watching this one for a little too long....I agree with Dirty's early posts on this topic....Kill them all...well at least some so we can get back to a balance. Seals are not only eating mature fish, they are also targeting smolts during the out migration. We really should start thinking outside of the box and partner with FN's to finish the job.

I'll be happy to provide some lead toward the cause...probably even offer to drive my sled around. Only stipulation would be we can't return to the dock with any live ammo. Let's face it, the whole partnership would be a win/win. Less sea lions and seals, more food for FN to sell...and one happy angler doing my part...I could even guide them onto some of the problem children we lost fish to this summer. Sweet justice.

I have had some tricky years out there as far as seals are concerned. The water front and Oakbay are especially stacked with wiley seals.

This year though I did not get bothered once.

LOL FN You meen First Nations sorry I thought we were talking about a leading asualt rifle manufacturer for the United States Army, they make one-hell of a 223 or even a 338 Lapua or my favorite and totally on my christmas list the 50 BMG LOL.:D

This is the kind of reaction I wanted to this post:) just think of the difference we could make.........16 bullets would save one million salmon :D
