HOURSTON BOATS

Howdy,

I'll second that on the Hourston's. Not fancy, but built like a brick-sh*t-house.

Kris, if you're takin' women out on the chuck - YOU NEED A CUDDY WITH A HEAD! No gettin' around it.

If you're balking at new boat prices, find a good used - older - glass boat that needs repowered. You can pick em' up for a song. As has already been said here, look for early 70's or 80's Hourstons', Double Eagle's, Bertram's, etc. I would also recommend pre- 72' Sangsters and Fiberform's. Sangster sold his company in 72' and it's generally accepted that quality suffered thereafter and I believe Bayliner bought out Fiberform in the early 70's with the same result.

Myself, I found a 1980 Zeta, 19/cuddy last year. Zeta Boats was started in Vancouver in the same year (1972) Sangster Boats was sold, by a guy named Mike Hutcheson who in fact married Sangster's daughter and worked for Sangster for years. The Zeta quickly earned a reputation as a solid, well-built salt-chucker. I can attest to that as I have added a second bilge-pump to her and was amazed to find 5/8-inch thick hull both at the gunnel as well as near the keel when I replaced the thru-hulls.

Price:</u>19'Zeta(purchased from S.A.L.T.S. Society)------$2750.00
New: 220/hp 4.3/MPI/Mercruiser/Alpha drive/installed - 13500.00
New: 7000/lb Tandem trailer/w-brakes (Empire Welding) 3400.00
GST--------------------------------------------------1180.00

Total------------------------------------------------$20830.00

So far I'm extremely happy with this boat. When I get her propped correctly, I'll sip my beer while she busts 50mph in a 3-foot chop.

Best wishes with your new boat.

Cheers
Terry

Thanks for all the help guys!!! You are all right...This descision will not be easy, and I really don't want to spend 50-60 thousand on a boat that will sit for most of the year. I have a budget in mind, and I will just have to stay within it. The problem is I really don't know enough about glass boats to make an educated descions as all I have ever owned has been alluminum....Thanks agian!!!

Hello Kris ! i live in East sooke thats on the other side of the basin . If i can help out please let me no m8 .

Hey Kris,

If you want a trophy there is a nice one for sale on Craigslist Vancouver. the boat is located in Portland.....

I just picked up a 22 foot double eagle. I ran it last night in the alberni inlet. The wind was blowing as it usually does here, about 2-3 foot chop. It runs at 22 knots through that stuff no prob. The most solid boat ive ever had

I bought a 17.5 Hourston from Concerned Angler a month or so ago...it is very solid and deep and never misses a beat...all in all I love my Hourston!!!!!
Oh and the fish love coming aboard :D

I've got at 17.5' Hourston.
As Silver Bullit says - take a boat up the Alberni Inlet in the afternoon. That's the real test.
I went up with someone else once in a brand new 16' Double Eagle - we got hammered, wasn't fun at all. My boat - no problem. Not to mention it only burns $25/hr on my volvo 4 cyl!

All of the Westcoast manufactures like Double Eagle, Hourston, Zeta and Monaro are very good boats. Like some have said not all of the fancy stuff, but they nothing rides better. My thoughts.

I have to admit this hourston I have is the best boat i have ever ran it eats a 3 to 4 ft wave ive only had it come down really hard maybe a few times other than that it rides like a DREAM , my guide boat was a 19 ft with pod loved it as well one of the main reasons went with a bigger one and will never look back, they are a very good boat...

Bang on with that Wolf! The trend back in the day with many of the older West Coast boat builders was to use LOTS of glass for the lay-up. 'Hand-laid' boats were generally of superior quality/strength - the hull of my 1980 Zeta is 5/8th-inch at the top of the freeboard(gunnel) as well as where the thru-hull's go through; compare that to some of the others. That said, I was told by the guy that built Zeta's (Hutcheson) that there are some good gun-boats (FG sprayed on with a gun) out there built by people that knew how to do it properly, but these are the exception rather than the rule.
