When you vuy the rhys davis teaser heads in the 3 packs, what size of hook do you use with them? 2/0? 1/0? and treble i presume? thanks!

To fish or not to fish,
What a stupid question!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will sit on a boat drinking beer for a life time :D
TGIF =Thank God It Floats

Depends on what size of Chovie you are going be using.. on a large/long 6" chovie I like a bit of a larger hook 1/0. On smaller bait I would go size 1 or even size 2 on really small bait... all depends on what your comfortable with and what you think is right.... every one has their own preference.. more importantly as long as the hook is sharp!

..... and yes a treble hook. The VMC or GAMAKATSU treble hooks are good choices.. again all depends on what you like... The VMC cone cut hooks are salt water hooks they don't rust! you can use them for several trips... The Gamakatsu are more money and I think are sharper out of the pack than a VMC hook however the Gamakatsu I find start to rust after one trip... Either way I tie new leaders/knots and new hooks for every fishing trip...

i go for the 2 trebles when fishing chovies, chinooks seem to love to nip at them. and as previous posters said, match hook size to bait.

There was a discussion on this a while back. you might be able to find it if you do a search.
I use two singles on my rigs. 5/0 gammy's are pretty solid. its all personal preference. the only thing i advise against is using trebles when your releasing lots of fish; coho and undersized chinook can get quite torn up by them, and if takes to long to unhook them, they might die too.

Thanks Captain Dudds

Another vote for singles. Mustad 92553 for the first 4/0 and Gamakatsu for the second. Trailer seems to do all the damage anyway.

Required in Vancouver areas, so what I'm used to. New gear every trip, for sure.

Own your own stuff.

I remembered Wolf also mentioned that he uses VMC trebles now. Here's a link to VMC.

Any thoughts on which model number in what finish, stle etc? There are lots of interesting choices.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Yes I use vmc conecut perma steel in either a 1/0 or 2/0 on my anchcovies yes there a buck a hook but I sometimes use them for up to a week depending if there still sharp the nicest thing is they dont rust and very strong pretty cheapin the long run!!!! ive only had 2 guests straighten them and I thought the rod was going to break first LOL LOL.

The gammys are extremly sharp also but dont last very long and they are a bit weeker there thinner and I have had people straighten them often.
Just from PERSONAL experience.

Good luck Wolf

Hey Wolf great info. Do you guide outta Renfrew mostly?

I only saw you out fishing Sooke once last summer and i fish pretty much every day unless she blows up from secratary to otter and the trap and Head alot too.
Just wondering?

I gotta say trebles arent great on big fish. We used gammie trebs and found out that you need to hook the fish properly or the fish will turn and straighten your hooks. Ive never had that problem with a decent quality single. Anyone else have this happen to them much?

First strike mostly up at knight inlet and sooke im usually up at otter pt area.
Kelly I seem to do more than ok with big fish on the treble hooks, there very easy to use with anch.and 3 hooks are better then one especially when one of them is in the anch. a bigger hook is always better for bigger fish look at a springs mouth they can eat a 9 to 12 inch herring no problem I dont think a 2/0 hook isnt going to make a difference its just way stronger than a smaller hook, look at all the old commercial plugs they have a 6/0 to 10/0 single on them for a reason strengh and durability and they use there gear alot more than we ever will as sporties.

Good luck Wolf

Ok, Mr. Wolf, here are the Coneheads ...ala SLN ...ala VMC

What number do you like? I've been using the round style (but not in VMC). I see a few different types in Round and O'SHAUGNESSY.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Red I use the vmc conecut 9650 p/s (perma steel)round treble 1/0 0r 2/0 size.

Hope that helps Wolf

Do you guys use vmc for halibut and What size do you prefer?

Don't see a conecut in the 9650?

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Its there you have to look under the treble hooks took me a bit found them but there there.

Wolf

Nope, the 9650 is a standard cut point, not a cone cut.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Yes I know there web site is a bit vauge but they do come in the cone cuts as well but there site doesnt say that but thats the code for sure went in to the takle box to make sure for you.

Strike one I use mustad 9/0 s/s for halibut singles in a tandum set up seems to work for ME....

Wolf

Excellent, thanks Wolf.

I'm off the Outdoors Show at the trade-X.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."
