Herring have come into Nuttal Bay

Awesome site down at the bay by our house. The herring are in. Sealions chasing them up on shore. Me casting my herring jigs with sea lions literally at my feet. It's quite a sight. I have some video that I will try and post.

Can't figure out why there "random" spawnings up and down ECVI right now.

Qualicum is "done"......Also Hornby and Denman....

Think they were "late" down Nanaimo and Victoria way.

Nuttal Bay isn't very far from Qualicum.

Thought the herring spawn was a "one shot" event on the east coast.....

So there's roving hordes of herring out there still yet to get it on?

Thanks. I heard the birds were very active yesterday in Schooner Cove but no actual sign of a spawn.

From talking to the dfo herring manager, the herring generally start up the top east coast of the isle, and spawn down the coast to tge south in successive spawns and then put the west coast. Last year saanich inlet started on march 27. They only hang for a coupe days and then vanish again.

I didn't think that the herring had spawned in the bay but I checked today at low tide and the seaweed was full of roe. There are a few eel grass beds a little further out from the low tide line and I'm sure that they will be full of roe. It's nice to see.
Does anyone know when the young herring will hatch?
Do they stay around the bay they were born for a certain period of time?
Do most of the herring born in the Straight of Georgia migrate out to the westcoast?
Do some herring spend their entire lives in the Straight?
Enquiring minds want to know
