For those of you interested in herring recovery efforts and conservation, there's a meeting coming up soon in Saanichton. Details below:

Thursday, February 13 · 9am - 4pm PST
7728 Tetayut Road Saanichton, BC

The W̱SÁNEĆ Hereditary Chiefs, the University of Victoria, the Herring Conservation and Restoration Society, and Conservancy Hornby Island invite you to attend this all day event.

First Nations, environmental organizations, and fisheries scientists will gather to discuss the restoration of the Salish Sea's distinct herring populations and collaborate on strategies to bring vitality back to communities for whom herring was a foundational species.

First Nations communities from the Salish Sea are invited to share their knowledge about the importance of herring, voice their thoughts and concerns with current approaches to herring management, and discuss how to move forward together.

Lunch, coffee, and snacks will be provided.

The Herring Conservation and Restoration Society is a new non-profit dedicated to conserving and restoring local resident herring populations in British Columbia, to bring these important fish back to the abundant levels enjoyed by coastal communities before contact. This is the first organization in the province dedicated exclusively to showcasing the collective local conservation and restoration efforts for herring.

Our goals:

  • Provide opportunities for open, respectful, and timely conversation about herring conservation and restoration.
  • Promote herring conservation and restoration.
  • Run a digital Herring Journal newsletter that showcases herring conservation and restoration research and grassroots efforts and provides updates on commercial fisheries activities.
  • Support a moratorium on commercial fisheries to rebuild local populations.
  • Present a community response each year during the herring harvest consultation period.
  • Push Fisheries and Oceans Canada to produce a herring restoration plan.
  • Have community-based, non-industry representatives at the herring harvest planning table.
  • Support Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s planned transition away from fish farms in British Columbia.

Yeah look at the coded wording. Looks like a sector grab masked as conservation. Might be wrong be certainly looks like that in wording.
There is no such thing as a sector grab. As I have always stated for more than twenty years it's time to start building relationships. Especially after reading over Agenda 21, 2030 and 2050 along with studying much of UNESCO and how the ENGO's are married to the UN through funding initiatives to which they are partnering at an alarming rate with Aboriginal people to further these agendas. Unfortunately people in general are being tricked and will eventualy see all that they have lost through the guise of the UN and their Agenda partnerships. All fishing sectors need to partner and create meaningful, helpful, courtious relationships that are in fact equally benificial to each. These are simply my long term historical thoughts reiterated again.

B...........................................................................................................................................................................................S!
Things transition for a reason. No fishery has been a grab, but you can rest assured the divisiveness between all fishing sectors have allowed things to change in someways with a negative impact in one way or the other amoungst all fishing sectors.

Sigh...Not getting into this debate again. I am retracting my statement. Carry on...
This isn't about what you think it is, and missed completely my comment.

As many know I am status HAIDA, I don't believe my dialogue to be any form of debate, only to share information and thoughts. Everyone knows how important fishing is to me and my family and almost every friend, aquantence and almost every person I know. I don't see colour, I see people and as people we all need to get together and figure things out in an equally equidable way. That's all I know. I'll stop posting on this thread now so as to not trigger any more issues that others may have.

So again making it clear comments not directed at FN Rob. It's all stakeholders. Not sure why your posting this.

Anyways I am out.

It's all good, I am not in anyway upset with you or anyone for that matter, I have no reason to be. I am simply sharing general information and that I am for every fishing sector having opportuny below conservation. It's all quite simply thoughts and ideas and truly not a debate on my part. I do however respond if I am mentioned even though I said that I would not so as to not garner further negative responses from my simple dialog. I appologise that I have forgotten your name, I believe it has been many numerous years since I have interacted with you. I have a bad memory for names of folks that I don't see or know very well. Not to worry, my responses are alway meant to be on the lighter side as I do tend to avoid conflict. Cheers, I hope the rest of your week is very happy and prosperous. Take care.

This is a quick snapshot of the Draft of the Herring IFMP 2025:
  • Haida Gwaii stock assessment still doesn’t look that great although it did improve a bit from last year compared to previous years
  • Central Coast stock assessment not fantastic in terms of spawning biomass or the forecast for the coming year but still above the limit reference point. Not developing rebuilding plans. Comparable to where it’s been the last few years
  • Prince Rupert stock assessment looks quite good. Stocks forecast to be some of the highest abundances seen in time series going back to early 50’s
  • In 2023, West Coast stock assessment saw a jump in the spawn index estimates and the amount of spawning herring, which continued last year. Forecast for upcoming year is quite good
  • Strait of Georgia has been maintaining itself at a high level. Last year’s spawn was up a bit

Good news for most of those stocks. Not much of a fishery planned for this year so that should make folks happier. There are still more stocks that are not fished or assessed Like are 12.

Yes as most of us on water have witness the increase of herring around . There always seems be those that would have that fishery closed.
