Heat Pumps

Been using Accutemp for the last 22 years. So far been happy with what is now our second heat pump. First one lasted about 18 of the 22 years but given the way appliances last now a days, be surprised if this one lasts as long.

I should clarify. The HVAC outfit called their insurer and had the restoration company come immediately, those folks worked hard to remove flooring and baseboards, get fans going and generally restrict damage. But I know from experience that from here on it's up to me to keep on top of the repair process. Everyone in the trades is super busy so I'm sure there will be a wait. I could ask to be engaged to do the work myself, but (a) the insurance industry thinks payment at 90 days is fair play, and (b) I did the work once already and I've got better things to do this winter.

You can just take the payout if you want to put it back on your terms but it’s typically way less then they would pay someone to do it.

your a builder so you probably won’t be happy with the trades work anyways

Yeah one more reason to stay away from insurance payout.

The HVAC guys were back a couple hours later once the restoration people were done. They worked late to complete the furnace install. They did all the right things, and the invoice within 24 hours was probably computer generated - albeit a little tone deaf. The company is a member of the local CHBA, and there's a meeting coming up next week. I'll buy the owner a beer and ask him WTF, mate?

if you are a little bit handy, try these guys. they sell a ductless system that most homeowners can install themselves. ends up being way cheaper than getting a mechanical contractor. The lines are precharged and have quick connects so special tools are not required. you do need an electrician to wire in a service for it though.
I got a 36k btu system with 4 air exchange heads for $6,300.
due to the supply chain issues i have not received it yet but i am expecting it in the next week or two.
That’s a pretty good price. I’d have to upgrade my service and run the coolant lines beside my unsightly gas lines. Wish I had pushed back and made them crawl through my attic like the owner said they would.

Let us know how the project goes!

We replaced our furnace about 6 years ago and installed a new HE gas one plus a heat pump, with the furnace set to kick over at about 3 degrees C. The heat pump is awesome and the cooling affect is great, hoping it doesn't blow its brains out. We also installed the trane perfectair or whatever it's called for filtration and that's been great to keep the dust levels down. I'd do all 3 again for sure.

There are some federal & provincial grants available. As it was explained to me, the federal grant is available pending a pre & post install audit and suited if you are replacing your primary, old heat source like SpringFever's son. If you are just adding a unit or two for a little heat & cooling, you’ll only be eligible for the provincial.

We’re going with Coastal Heat Pumps. Booked in for a May 2022 install. Call Graham - +1 (778) 676-3971. Young guy but very professional and honest.
I had Coastal do my house a few years ago with no complaints. We had a couple small issues and they rectified them quickly for us. I have two pumps and 6 head units in my house.

I did have to upgrade my service as well. apparently my service was already undersized. house was built with gas furnace and water heating but a previous owner had those removed and converted the house to electric baseboard. the house was designed for 100 amp service with gas but wasnt upgraded when switched to baseboards. I figure at some point im going to have 1 or 2 electric cars so i upgraded my service to 200 amp. that cost about $5K. the 220v 40amp line for the HP hookup was only $700 of that bill.

The lines for these systems cant go through the attic because they also serve as drainage for condensation.

Thanks to everyone for the great input.
I have Westbay coming out tomorrow.
I’ll get 4- 6 quotes before I make a decision

Please be decent and limit to 3 quotes. You want people out there working, not in an office doing quotes for work they have a tiny chance of getting.
If it’s a basic system I agree.

However it took me multiple quotes from multiple companies to come up with a solution to my heating challenges my house presented. Every single company that came and looked at my house had a different solution.

The stats say that mechanical contractors have higher average margins than us general contractors, but I wonder how they do it when they're providing free design consulting with their free quotes.

Few years back insurance wanted us to replace our oil tank . its in the crawl space ummm why?
it hasn't seen ay weather ..nope then it was supposed to be double walled on a poured cement pad with a barrier around it with anchor bolts!!!! So for the over 3 grand for a tank and time doing all that crap we said NO as I looked into duckless heat pump as we moslty heat with a wood stove anyways...All I said to Wife was in summer it works as a air cond..... didnt even get to finish sentence!!! LOL
I installed it my self as its not hard to do HVAC guy came and hooked it up and signed off on it then the tank had to be remove and signed off (btw tank was in pristine condition very small amount of rust as they had to cut it up into 4 pieces to get out).
Took a few months but we got the grat hat covered the whole system .. all we paid was for the HVAC and removal , and best part with all that summer heat cant tell you how happy a woman can be being cooled down !!!!! happy wife happy life !!!!!

Just because im following this thread internet does not mean i want to be bombarded with heat pump stuff lol

Yesterday in my mailbox was a nice note from the HVAC outfit thanking us for our patience with the water line break, and assuring us that their insurance was handling it. Accompanied by $100 gift card for Earls. Well done, people.
