Heading to Nootka mid August

Well finally decided to try Nootka sound for the very first time this year, booked a guys trip in mid August with my two buddies. I usually fish Port McNeil every year, but wanted to try something different.

This will be a new experience, never fished the west side before and don't know what to expect.Any tips for the area would gladly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tidal.

All those places on the info I gave you are easy to get to from Critter.

i'm there mid July and again Aug 11-16th and have fished the area the last 7 years. The locals and people at Moutcha will point you in the right direction, but, to get you started there are essentially two prime approaches to fishing Nootka. You can fish inside the sound or outside at Bajo Reef and a few other areas. Fishing inside is very protected and you can always find a place to drop the gear out of the wind. Prime spots are Camel Rock, San Carlos Point, Three Bay, Hoiss Point, but, at certain times many other areas can be hot. You will see where people are trolling and typically they are there for a reason. Some people still fish the Lighthouse out towards the Sounds entrance. Personally the restrictions the last few years in my view make that area less desirable. The shore line just west of Critter Cove to Hoiss can be very good at times as well. You don't have to go far from Moutcha to find good fishing. Often the winds pick up in the later part of the afternoon in the Sound and the best protected areas would be San Carlos point on the East side or on the East side of Strange Island trolling up the Tahsis Channel. Fishing out at Bajo can be spectacular. Big silver fish on there way South. Sometimes an hour out there can be enough to get your limit. I've been out and had 4-5 good hits in an hour. Lots of large fish, but, you need the right boat to go out there. You are 8 miles off shore and it can get lumpy. Don't go out if you're no with someone or comfortable in big water.

U out there the same times as me this year? 16th to the 21st

Derby, I'm there July 12-15 then I have my August dates as noted above. Looks like we are on a slightly different schedule. Keep me posted on your results and I'll do same.
TS, I use primary anchovy and spoons. Critter Cove has every spoon you'd ever need. Drop into their tackle store and load up. There are a few standbys like their "Pilchard" which is a solid producer. Katherine will give you all the tips you need...If you're fishing outside, sometimes the coho will drive you nuts and you'll need to run spoons or go thru a lot of anchovies. Also, a lot of guys fish plugs on the outside which you can also get at Critter Cove (I don't work there btw, just a great place). Good luck.

Let me know when U get back...... I'll do the same... :)

I do have a few tomic plugs in my arsenal, but what is the real go to one to use? I will be stopping in at wholesale to load up on some spoons and plugs onto way through nanaimo. Does a blue and silver 4" coyote still work on the outside? Or is it more a green glow and cop car area?

I'm sure others have other choices, but, I stick to green/white and the Tomic Pilcard (of which there are many combinations). Pretty sure the silve/blue Coyote is well used as well.
