Head Returns..... Where Caught/Where Were They Heading

Must be USA.

According to DFO, lately, it seems to be nothing but doom and gloom for rivers north of the border for returns this year.

I have Cowichan Chinook tagged results for 2012. If you want I can send you an excel file with all the years for this stock.

That's some very interesting information. Seeing that I wonder why we in area 14 protect the run like we do but the other areas are free to fish them. You'd think they put a restriction on area 17 during June and July to protect those fish more so they have more opportunities to spear them in the river....

The excel file would be interesting to sort by date to see which periods they get hit hardest and which areas are hammering them the hardest during our Saanich Inlet closure from Aug 1 on. Do they have any hatchery fish swimming with those early fraser fish that fives the south island their heavy slot restrictions. It would be interesting to see when those hatchery fish get hammered the most when they are schooling along with the wilds. Are they getting slammed on the inside or campbell river on the way down, or does the majority go westcoast as we were told?

Gee lets not get to scientific.. you may throw off DFO's Ouija Board science  You only need to look at the fat slabs on "other threads" to realize early Fraser runs magically migrate through Sooke - Victoria area :D

If we just took FishFlyguy Steve off the salt and kept him lakebound, the stocks would be fine.

back on the list for 2013 as I just got a letter from DFO that my winter (Jan.) spring was a cowichan river fish.

Just got one back yesterday. Caught at Tent Island off Chemainus in May. It was from the Samish River hatchery in Puget Sound. God bless the American hatchery program.

Dave

Sorry, GDW, I'm having trouble linking the lack of tags in salmon you've caught with what the Americans are doing in the link you've posted. There is all kinds of very positive hatchery activities going on up here as well. Tagging salmon is very labour intensive and expensive. Volunteer run hatcheries don't have the resources to do it - but this doesn't take anything away from the amount of work that the folks up here are doing enhance salmon runs.

What impresses me about the US especially the hatchery I linked is they created a salmon run on a fruit orchard. This lead to increased # of fish without adding hatchery genetics to a wild run. Would DFO ever take a fruit field and say hey let's put a salmon hatchery here?

I just thought it was a cool facility im sure others agree. not to take anything away from all the hard working volunteers here they do deserve kudos too.

Received an email regarding one of the heads I submitted last year. was a five year spring from Robertson creek. Seems odd that I caught it at the trap shack. Was this guy lost or just taking the scenic route home?
The email also explained why a lot of clipped fins do not have wire tags . The salmon head recovery program simply cannot obtain enough tags for all marked fish . 1 in 4 chinook and 1 in 10 coho heads submitted actually have a tag. The heads are also a valuable source of tags they can reuse for future stocks.

I believe this program truly has significant value in regards to monitoring and conservation efforts of the stocking programs, and everyone should make an effort to submit all marked salmon heads. Not only do you assist the recovery program, but the information returned to you is well worth the read
Send in those heads!
