Hi guys first time to try for hali tomorrow, got all the gear I need I think, (also empty wallet) ...on the spreader bar short leg I'm using a 2lb weight on some 40lb test and 80lb leader on the bait.
Not sure what length I should make the leader or the weight?

I could use some advice guys!

thanks

Some guys clip the weight right to the short leg. Others use various lengths of leader line. I've used 1ft up to 3ft. Can't say that one works better than another.

Ok, thanks! I'm using 40 lb mono on the weight so it can break off if I get stuck. Right now I've rigged the weights on about 16" of mono. With that set up, what would be a good leader length to use on the bait side? Or does it matter?

Thanks

I theory your weight on a 40lbs test is good, but it could make a mess going down, don’t let it free fall, I put the weight right on the swivel of the spreader bar, with 80lbs test mono 16” o 20” to the bait , loosing gear is part of the game, the chicken ranch is nasty for snags now, I bet you there is thousands of rigs down there, ps I never fish there anymore

Ive tried all lengths and ill be honest doesnt really matter . I will say though if you have a 20 inch leader make sure your weight length from spreader bar is min 30 inchs as you do not want your gear on bottom if it hangs up can be a real pain to get off sometimes only to breaking the main line and losing everything.. I personally run a long weight lead and doesnt effect it at all

I find those Gibbs pink rubber cover over leader set ups work great. The leader floats and stays off main line and spreader bar.

No need for leader between weight and spreader. Clip it on directly, removes a tangle opportunity.
