Halibut Reel

i just bought a Penn 149 deep water series, it is second hand and a bit older, does anyone else have anything to say about these reels? I only paid 10$ at swap & shop, so im not to worried if its a bust, but it looks and seems like a great reel.

Those are the old wire line models (made in the USA) because of the narrow spool for wire line they work well with spectra fibre line.

The handle is a bit short and the gear ratio could be better but for $10 you're laughing I just saw one on EBay for $60!

Since Penn doesn't make that model anymore parts can be hard to come by but I'm sure you'll get your money's worth out of it. [8D]

Abu C3i-7000... Hold my previous accolades... Cancel my good comments...

Casting 6oz & bait today, the clutch partly re-engaged part-way through the cast and mangled my main gear before I could stop the danged thing. I had to handline my weight & rig back in. (same thing is wrong with my Shimano Catalan 400 and that never got to the water before it happened)

Hard stopping a power cast with about 8oz flying full tilt when I'm at full stretch. Just about broke my neck & peeled my thumb.

(!@#$%^ chinese swedish reels anyway...) Lucky I brought a spare rig.

I've also been looking at the Trinidad 30 (maybe 20 or 16, depending on my line choice, but I'm pretty happy w/65#). I like the centrifugal cast control and I prefer a conventional open-frame when I'm casting braids. I don't think I'll go the TN route though, those things are a bit awkward to thumb. I think I'll stay with the wider lower frame.

Another option is the 700 size Calcutta or TE. You might prefer levelwind, I'd choose open frame. Now one of my Abu 7000's are trashed, I might talk myself into shopping along with you... or get my Baja mag-ed. Either reel, I'll have a bottom-fishing, shore-casting cross-over reel.

Cheers!

I may have gotten lucky. I took my C3 apart & the gears were just a bit buzzed on the one edge. It was the clutch gears that just slipped & re-set the teeth such that it would'nt re-engage properly. They should have a retaining clip on the lever-gear to keep those plastic gears securely-positioned.

I'll see if I have it fixed well enough to hang in there. It really casts well normally.

That Trinidad tall Narrow that I handled & was too awkward for my casting was a size 40, not a 30. I checked with my buddy to see if he wanted to sell or trade for his Calcutta700 before I opened up my reel.

Good luck.

I have a few, first the Penn 330 gti, this is a great real for the money, I landed a 126 pounder and no problems a flawless real for the money.. my second is a okuma convector, still a good reel but not as smoth as the penn.. the third is the shimano tekota 800...more money but very smooth and my best tested too date...but for the money the 330 penn or 340 is tough too beat..hope this helps

Anybodu use the Shimano TLD-20?
Been looking at them.
Too small?

I upgraded to the tld-20's this year as I really like the lever drag system over the star system of the penn 330.
I was going to go with avet's but just couldn't justify the money...
The TLD is about perfect and with the Tiburon T-Bar TB-STLD20/30 handle is even closer to perfect.

I use a Shimano 700 Calcutta with 50lbs spectra on a Shimano 6'6" Travela. It has been good to me and continues to perform trip after trip for the past few years. Mason
