Halibut closure?

that's pretty lame of DFO - sounded like they were hinting to everyone that it would close today - from what I heard, even outfitters was coming out and telling customers that...now nothing? It's good if its open, but these kind of games sure as hell aren't. Guess it should be expected though.

A little lead time would be nice before they shut it down, but then again, this is DFO we're talking about.
It seems like it's still open so get them while you can!

Hooch
"They say blood is thicker than water- is that why my bilge pump doesn't work?"

Given that DFO is currently allowing only 1 halibut a day down from 2, you would think that with a 50% reduction on a daily basis that the sports guys are already doing more than our share for conservation, without adding short seasons on top of it. When is it going to go back up to 2 per day? The real issue is the ridicules 88% commercial verses 12% sport allocation. Were the commercial guys asked to make a 50% reduction in what they can catch in a day as well? Given how much more a sport caught halibut adds to the economy and the fact that this is a public resource, one would think that a 50% allocation to sport fishing is more than called for and fair.

It should remain open in area 19/20 as the catch from here on out is not that significant on the overall catch. God knows areas 19/20 has been hit the hardest province wide this summer. Give us something as a reward for being so accommodating to DFO's last minute early season salmon restrictions.

The stupid thing about it if you reduce the commercial catch, this will reduce the available Halibut for sale resulting in higher prices for the commercial guys this will help compensate for there reduction in quota.
Now for us and especially you guides, we receive no monetary compensation for a reduction in our catch limits. Pi$$ on DFO
