Well it's not really halibut but sturgeon on the Columbia. Think it covers all the basic principles though, and I really dig his deck-hands.

One question for the pro's here on this forum: the guy says an anchor line ratio of 4 to 1 to the depth you are fishing. So... is he saying that fishing in 200/ft of water requires 800/ft of rope? Seems a tad much to me. What's the bare-minimum you guys would work with on the South Island for Hali's?

2 to 1 ratio is the minimum , I believe , for our area. It really depends on the type and weight of your anchor and chain and the current speed etc.
 
The ratio of 4 to one is correct however there are often times when you are in only 180' of water. 800 foot of rhode just isn't practical and tying off is required. That too presents an issue. I personally carry 700' of rhode including chain. I toss the whole kit and kaboodle in and it seems to cover all my needs. 700' does not look like alot when stretched out either. Amazing how quickly it gets used up.
 
Yep close to 600 ft for me thats why Ive always said give lots of room out there.

SF is short for sport fishing LOL LOL
well I do drink beer and whiskey the rest nope!!!! never done it in my life so your on your own LOL LOL

Aye... me too Laddy, this coming May 1st I'll be celebrating 20-yrs of no drugs!
