Haki Pass

Hey all. Any thoughts or experiances with fishing Haki Pass?
I would guess if I could cross that place off, I would have hit some of the best fishing in BC. And certainly some of the more historic type fishing spots.

So far I have been to
Rivers inlett (1)
Langara (2)
Prince Rupert (1, but doing it again thsi summer)
Kano inlett (West side of the QCI)(3)

Another place I really want to hit is Bella Bella. Not so much from what I have heard, but it might get my wife out fishing with me as she used to teach there.

It really can depend on timing...and although I don't know the best time to hit it up there there were a bunch of guys flying back in from Hakai to the south terminal in late July when I was heading to Kyuquot. These guys had a lot of boxes of fish, but according to the pilot, only 1 of about 10 boxes contained salmon and the rest was just halibut. Not saying that's a bad thing and also it was an medicore year as a whole, up and donw the coast.

I have heard very good things about Hakai from the past but I really don't know too much as of late. One way to look at it....if they built a lodge there the fishing had to have been or still is pretty good. Most times some good local "intell" is what you need when looking at the best time to be there.

IMHO the best time to fish Hakai Pass and area is the first two weeks of August. The big springs are there and the coho are starting to put on some good weight. Do you have your own boat or are you looking for a resort situation? There are a few resorts in Hakai Pass and there is Shearwater on Denny Island. If you are on your boat there are B+B's as well as cabins available on Denny Island.
The previous poster is correct....I have fished those area waters for 15 years coming out of Bella Coola. I know a few of the locals as well as the resort owners and last year was not good. It would seem no one knows exactly why but there is no shortage of opinions. We did OK but no big
fish either salmon or halibut and I knocked off a huge amount of boat gas travelling around finding them. Having said that when times are good the Hakai fishing holes have produced some very good springs for a lot of people. There is also good fishing out of Bella Bella.
Now you got me thinking I gotta get to Bella Coola and drag my boat out of the barn and shine it up, gas it up, and get out there!

from what I've heard its waste of money these days, but I'm sure it still has its days. If you really want to cross it off your list go for it, but don't expect crazy fishing.

Couple of things....
Hakaii is a beautiful place and can be extrememly productive at times and I've been there when it's been bang on and I've been there when the bite was so bad...time was standing still.
I find that over the years for whatever reason the downrigger fishery has far out produced traditional mooching set ups and most lodges up that way just simply don't fish with downriggers that often.
It might even be as simple as you cover more ground in a day with downriggers over mooching.
Anyhow, I'll probably get there again this year for two days if I'm lucky....
I know some guy's pulled a few big fish out of that country last year....and I think first 2 weeks of August is bang on...

Wow... nice "resume", wish I had those under my belt!

Agree that it's all about timing and that the window is short, been there 3 times and not interested in ever going back.

Did catch my biggest ever @ Hakai but I think the days of multiple 40#+ fish are gone forever.

I know of 2 guy's that got fish close to 70lbs each last year up that way....
One thing about Hakai is when the big boy's are around and your rod goes pop....chances are she's 35lbs+....

Guided at Hakai Pass for 4 years and the best time is definately the first two weeks of August. In the last few years I have been fishing Ucluelet and find that it is consistently more productive than Hakai. I have caught more 50 lbs plus fish off Ucluelet in the past 4 years than I had in 4 years at Hakai.

However, having said that, I must caution that if one is looking for that 'once in a lifetime fish' of over 60 lbs one must consider Hakai
as the runs through to Rivers pass through Hakai and area. Remember the 84 lbs caught at Hakai shows it does occur.
