Having just enjoyed three solid weeks of the most spectacular spring and coho fishing that I've seen in my 40 years of living on Haida Gwaii, I have to believe that the fishing farther down the Coast should be turning excellent soon. There are lots of tyee-class springs, and most of the fish in the 20-25 pound range have roe and milt that's still very undeveloped, meaning they'll be feeding heavily and packing on the pounds. Fortunately, there's lots of bait around for them to munch on, both needlefish and a wide range of herring, despite surface water temperatures still near 60, and sunfish showing at the surface on a daily basis. It hasn't been necessary to fish deeper than 40 feet all month, even on the bright days. Hopefully the heavy rain forecast for the Lower Mainland will flush out at least the Lower Fraser, and the whole West Coast will get some heavy rain before too late in September.
