Ghost fishing gill net in the Fraser North Arm

The net is gone. Today, around noon it was still there so I phoned DFO and again made a complaint. They said they knew of it and were sending someone to remove it.

I went and fished out at t-10 and had a great day playing catch and release with pinks. When I came back the net had been cut off the pilings. Not sure if it was DFO or not but it is definitely gone.

This morning I got in close and found a name marked on one of the floats on that net. I took a picture of that name. This evening the float was gone so I assume DFO has it now. If not, I have it. Hopefully some charges are laid and and example made so that this doesn't happen again.

Send the pics to the Media. Public awareness is a powerful weapon politically. The more hell we raise to embarrass DFO the more likely they are to actually do something if for nothing else but to shut us up.

The DFO sure are useless. It really shows that they could care less about the conservation of the fish. It's all about the money and being PC these days. We can't continue to manage our fisheries in this manner.

There is a gill net in the fraser river north arm just north of the Musqueam boat launch. This net has been in the water since at least Sunday, Aug 28. The net is full of fish; sockeye and pinks and has not been checked in at least 3 days.

It's suspended from two log boom pilings about 30' apart. I know it's not been checked because on sunday we passed it at low tide and there was a salmon suspended out of the water dead. Today the net was still there and the same salmon was a dried out skeleton, carcass picked clean by birds.

This is clearly a native net since it is on their land and no one else is allowed to fish with nets like this. Are there rules as to how long they can leave nets unattended for? This thing is killing loads of salmon. Every time the tide drops the salmon are suspended out of the water and die. The tide comes back in and it catches more fish.

I'm considering lodging a complaint to DFO. What do you guys think?

Well like they say, "They are great people deep down........."

I have not seen anything on this in the mainstream corporate media, or did I just miss it? It is looking to me like politically motivated sensorship of a huge story by the corporate media. In fact there are actually three huge stories complete with high quality pictures:

1. the dumping of oversupply/overfished (possibly freezer burnt or rotten) food fishery salmon into a river along with a lot of large plastic bags.

2. the abandoned drift net tied to pilings, killing salmon forever in the river and the fish rotting.

3. The refusal of DFO to investigate this outrage. -You did not get the truck license number from a boat??? Do they think there are 20,000 red pickups on the reserve and it is just too many to check out?

As for the drift net it looks like they have the name from the float.

I am not holding my breath expecting any charges in either case.
