Ghost fishing gill net in the Fraser North Arm

Well never heard back from global or cbc news, left messages and emailed them. Food fish my butt, what about the one in PA where the diver drowned this year.

This must not be news worthy but the poor seal with a flasher in his mouth, booo hooo!
Must be time to go back to work as the dfo and politics is getting to me.

I'll call this dude in Richmond and let him know where to get some some NICE CLEAN SALMON FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the net was still there today. And guess what else happened....

While I was checking on the net, a red pickup truck backs onto the pier on the native reserve. I'm watching this guy wondering if maybe he is the one who owns this net. Next thing I know I see him tossing garbage bags out of the back of his truck into the water. I drive over and he drives off. guess what's in the garbage bags?

Yeah. Sockeye. 30 or so garbage bags of sockeye being dumped into the fraser. I called DFO and lodged a complaint with all the details I had. Then I spent the next half an hour fishing garbage bags of fish out of the river. Take a look at these pics.

Something has to change. This is unacceptable.

It's cool that you're doing this. thanks for getting involved.

WTF.... This I think DFO and some Conservation Officers need to step up.. This is why natives should not be allowed to fish anything other than a traditional method which to my knowledge was spears... same with hunting... not rifles, and nets... spears and bow and arrow.. I was born in Canada too.. No one living in Canada should have rights, that another does not, and THIS is not a right... Right to abuse a resource like this... In my mind they shouldn't even have garbage bags either if they want to be traditional. DFO and CO's are sure setting a bad example if they expect everyone to play by the books, by allowing this sort of stuff to happen.
No wonder people don't follow the rules, when the rules are clearly broken by some and go unpunished. It's a sad day when people like us fight so hard just to be able to fish these fish and eat them, to see this kind of abuse and waste of something we actually cherish.

Throwing plastic bags into the Fraser is an act of environmental degradation, whatever they contained. The fact that they contained sockeye is even more disgusting. I hope someone actually takes action over this, even if it is not the DFO. Though dealing with First Nations lawbreakers is so politically sensitive, I expect no one will.....

Thank you for your support. I'm not an environmental activist or anything I just happend upon these incidents and felt it was wrong.

DFO said that since I didn't get the license plate on the truck they likely wouldn't be able to tie the dumped fish to anyone. But they will keep the report on record and notify fisheries officers.

They traditionally used fished weirs, which actually completely choked off the river.

Edit can't judge all by the actions of a few, however what I see in these photos truly disgusts me, and the lack of authority action disgusts me even more.

Can't get over how wrong this is.

The whole damn system is compeltely f*cked up when this kind of sh*t goes on and on and on with no accountability. And by accountability I mean that f****g DFO and the f*****g clowns in Ottawa

Has this seriously not hit the news yet? WTF?

I am guessing that the garbage bags were last years food fish, but still its deplorable this kind of behaviour. Someone has got to go down for this travesty. Even in the north their fish nets were attended, but this is atrocious.

Yes they definately look like(colour) last years food fish ... clean the freezers out and fillem back up. What surprises me is trendsetter is the only one using McD launch and seeing the set net from here and other sites.
