Fraser Sockeye Closure

So let me get this straight. They put out a notice at the end of the day on July 24th opening sockeye for 4 and then change their minds and close it on July 30th. I realize there are different runs and but this kind of management (where they try to manage down to the last piece) is crazy and unneccasarily confuses us. Pretty soon we'll all have to have lap tops on board the boat with sat links in order to know the instant some knucklehead decides to open or close a fishery.
Oh ya, and a heck of a lot more horsepower to zoom to an open area in time before it closes (or else to outrun the DFO)[}:)]

Anybody load up on Sockeye in that generous 4 day opening ? ;)

That's too funny. How do they actually come up with these decisions? Talk about perfecting the art of making yourself look stupid. At least it gave me a good laugh.

I don't know the Fraser, but in Sooke and Renfrew in the last few years, any openings for sockeye have been short, a few days to a week. Not sure how they come up with these assessments either.

In Sooke when there's a rare sockeye opening, a lot of fishermen will immediately target them and leave the anchovies at home (different spots, different gear). Get 'em while you can!

D.F.O. is bowing to pressure from the natives. The natives are worried they won't have enough fish to sell. There is an article in the National.

The sockeye opening will close as of July 30 (weds) 9 pm.

My understanding is that this recreational opening was to coincide with a commercial opening...so when the commercial closes, so does recreational.

If you want sockeye, best chase them tomorrow...

The news tonight said that the commercial guys and the natives were PO'd that sporties had an opening. Strange, then, that they decided to shut 'er down????
