Fraser Sockeye 2025

Better forecasting and better management is required, no question. But please do not bring up this nonsense argument of overcrowding of spawning beds! That's a typical myth and lie that commies have used for decades to pressure gov for openings. There is evidence that the Fraser once hosted sockeye returns of up to 100 millions a year. And nature did well back then. Nature can handle large returns fine without the need for thinning out by fishermen.

It depends what you are trying to achieve. There is lots of evidence that density dependence is a thing, in some cases it just limits production, in others production can decrease.

I keep hearing the refrain "Don't knock it down" from posters who likely aren't associated with commercial fishing interests/communities about this run. I don't think that alleged perceived risk is at all a defensible narrative. But.. while taking increased amounts of abundant sockeye - are there risks of intercepting weak stocks/species would be my question, instead...

Chris73 is far from a commercial fisherman. I had to laugh at the swipe at the Barkley Sound fishery. 🤣

Too much negativity with everything on here in general in most threads. That is what he was referring too. 100 percent agree.

I am glad it opened up. So done listening to all this doom and gloom. Gets old.

One thing I picked up on during Friday's meeting was a statement from the DFO rep saying "no in river fisheries have been identified" and that they were "waiting to satisfy the FSC fisheries first". That satisfaction might not be far off as the FN TAC is 400,000 fish, and to date they have landed 364, 496. Once their TAC is met the odds of an expanded rec opening should increase.

400k is the minimum, last I was told it’s above a million now

The hope is that once their fsc needs are met the rec fleet will get a chance on the river. We used to share it until someone shot the chief in the face for getting his net tangled in their gear.
