Fishing with spoons

I have always fished either bait or hootchies. I have a very basic question, no laughing or jokes. When fishing with a spoon do you tie it directly to your fishing line or do you use a swivel? Seriously [:I]

you will get a better action if tied direct to the welded ring.
the swivel limits the side to side action in my opinion.

I (and I'm pretty sure most people) tie a leader to the spoon, with a swivel at the end of the leader. Swivel then connects either to a flasher or a snap swivel on the main line.
I like a 42" leader.

I would agree here. Tie on a leader, then use swivel and snap to connect to the main line or flasher depending on how you are fishing that day.

I generally tie about a 6' leader as I sometimes fish them with flashers and the spoon has it's own action.

Lately, I have been using them without a flasher and doing quite well. I have been using either a dummy flasher on the downrigger cable or a flasher/hoochy combo on the bottom line and stacking the spoon without a flasher about 10' up the cable and placing it just a bit behind the hoochy (in distance behind boat).

Gerry, are you asking if there is a swivel attached to the ring of the spoon? or at the end of the leader ?

I would agree that you tie the leader directly to the spoon. I would disagree with the previous post though. I tried using the small swivel between the spoon and the hook for the first time this weekend and while it may not improve hook-ups I do believe it may be beneficial in keeping the fish from using leverage against the spoon while rolling. One thing for sure, it does save on bending the spoon up while trying to release small fish at the boat.

Scott, to clarify, I was asking if you tie a swivel onto the ring of the spoon. It seems that most folks are using about a 4 foot leader with a swivel on the end of that. I guess with it being that far ahead of the spoon it doesn't affect the spoon's action?
