Fishing near Nanaimo

Hey, Im relatively new to fishing. I have some time to go out this weekend, is there anything out there to catch? Also, if anyone has any suggestions about where to find some Halibut in the Nanaimo area, they would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Lots of fish around especially Halibut. First coordinate to try is 11'10 54'10. Just drop your line in with a dew worm and red and white bobber and whamo should have one almost immediately.

Yup right outside the bay you could limit out in a few minutes. Too bad its only two a day.

Blackfin, Halibut holes out of Nanaimo are like unicorns. Halibut that are caught are likely random occurrences and pleasant surprises while fishing for other things. at best. I do not of anyone who regularly catches halibut North of Sydney on the inside of the Island. If someone did have a halibut hole it would likely be their best kept secret.

I don't know what there is left for fishing at this time of year but the trout fishing in the local lakes has been pretty good the last little while.

I wonder if Islander55 changed his name...

I know that there are some bouys near the fingers. I always assumed that they were prawn traps. Are they he markers that you are talking about?

There are no buoys marking halibut spots. ;)

Hate to see these guys send you on a wild 'chicken' chase jigging on top of a prawn line. :p (although they are funny fellers :D )

Welcome to the nut house Blackfin. Like others have posted, there are some halibut in the mid straight for sure but nobody's going to give up a honey hole. Most of the fun with fishing, I find, is getting out there and trying your own thing. The worst part of internet fishing forums is the so called (never happens) quick fix that a lot of new fishers to area's are looking for. It actually ruins forums IMO. The search function on most forums works really well and I suggest you do some research on the area and get out there and try your own thing. If you do manage to get into a sweet spot, my suggestion is to keep it to your self and just share the great experience without letting the cat out of the bag so to speak ;). There are other anglers that could be effected by the possible blatant "right here" post made by someone new to the area. This usually only applies to halibut, lingcod, prawns, and crab. Salmon is a whole other conversation.

I know it all sounds kind of funny but in reality there are a lot of lazy people out there and the internet is a really big place. I truly hope you can understand this.

Cheers,
Sculpin

Just get out there and give it a go, if you are new to halibut fishing do what Sculpin says and search through the threads about halibut, especially what to look for as far as bottom strucutre, etc...then get yourself some good bait because quality bait works better than crappy bait and try out some spots. Herring, ocotopus, mackeral, squid, white power grubs, salmon bellies all work, some better than others at certain times of the year, places etc...other things work too but that should get you started. Tides are important to halibut fishing so try to fish close to slacks as a general rule, high water is my fave, but you can catch halibut when the tides are running too, its just generally not as productive. Get yourself a gaff, and a harpoon if you want so you can secure them when they get to the surface. Good luck.

Sculpin is right on and good to have an honest comment (gamechanger as well). Reports of the odd hali have been posted over the last couple years. Couple that come to mind are by salmon fishers, one off Snake Island and one off Thrasher Rock. Never caught one on this side personally, so good luck.
And stay away from the marker bouys. While it's not too bad getting caught up in a recreational trap set up, you don't want to tangle with a commercial as they are very heavy and the bouys just off Snake are anchored to a sunken ship.
Up to date charts are a necessity.
Cheers

I'm thinking fish ad chips myself...:)

Had that tonight LOL!

In all seriousness I have one left on the license. Might have to bring some rods along when crabbing and prawning. Nice to see the season extended and folks getting into some :).

Nicely done...:)

Hunh. Nice fish. Was out on Saturday, cought one little shaker, but both the prawn trap and the crab trap came up empty. Never had empty traps before, usually catch something in them. The music is not bad after a few beer, sort of catchy in a deliverancy west coast sort of way.
