Firearms on a small craft

What is the legality of carrying a firearm on a small fishing craft? I am under the expression that some folks carry a .410 shotgun on their boats to dispatch big halibut. Is this legal and are there different rules for shotguns vs rifles? If it is legal what is the firearm of choice on fishing craft on the Pacific coast?

Not legal to shoot halis with any kind of firearm in Canada. But go " North to Alaska" and there you can. Been there, done that. ....BB

you will just put a hole in the boat and sink so get an aluminum kids baseball bat.

Unless you regularly get butts over 200 lbs, there is no need for "packing" even if it is legal in the US of A . Ditto on the baseball bat too . Much safer for your passengers and your boat!

You can shoot from a boat as long as the motor is turned off and in the up position.

This is either going to be awesome or shut down quick.

Ibtl...........

My understanding is that it just has to be not under "mechanical power" . meaning you can row your butt around and shootfrom a power boat just fine as long as its not running. Motor being up is a moot point i think. but its not sopposed to be readily started. THey do mention tilting the motor, but the key in your pocket is the same IMO.

With all the profound wisdom provided, no one has answered the question " is it legal to carry a firearm on a small craft in the Canadian Pacific?

On the commie Troller boat I worked on as a young feller the odd BIG hali were bonked with a bit rusty LEE ENFIELD 303

wouldnt a shotgun be last type of gun you would want to use. why would you want to shot a 200lb worm ol fish anyway.

If you get checked dont excpet dfo to know the rules about transporting guns, half the time cops dont even know.

For hunting water fowl I do believe you have to have the anchor out before you can shoot

migratory game birds by using a power boat, unless the boat is beached, resting at anchor or fastened within or tied immediately alongside of a fixed hunting blind,

. Again im not a CO, but i have been killing ducks my whole life. as long as its not under power blast away is my understanding. and i cant find it , but when you are chasing cripples its pretty hard to be at anchor, and you need your motor running. THere is also a law that you must make every attempt to retrieve your game. And that one super ceedes the one above. Anyway! to answer the
orginal question yes you can carry a gun, if you have your PAL and its not loaded.

Good point Fish stalker, MOST of the time cops dont know whats ok when it comes to transporting firearms.
