Hey all,

In 2 weeks we are taking the boat around the west side of the Island for a week and plan to explore the Broken Islands, Bamfield, Uculet etc... We will be staying on our boat (a 26' Striper Pilothouse) -- it's pretty small for the 4 of us, so we plan to get off it as much as possible.

I've not done a family trip to this location before -- only fishing trips, so was looking for some advice on things to see and do -- we have a dinghy and can get almost anywhere. Are there any good marinas with swimming pools or nice beaches we can swim at in the area?

There are so many places to camp and a lot of beaches to explore, you really will love it! As you are cruising around looking at the beautiful scenery, just keep a watch for things to do and places you want to stay. It is a great place!

Here are a couple of nice short articles. If you are close to the outer side and want to camp? The north side of Clark Island has a nice beach, with plenty of wood and will work nicely. It is also, well protected.

If you run into more people than you like, head for the Willis, Dodd, and Turtle Island areas . There is a nice anchorage on the north side of Turtle in Jones Bay. Don't anchor on either side exposed to the channels, it can get a little choppy. It usually calms in the PM, but you will have that slapping noise all night long.

Effingham Island: There is a nice beach cave on the eastside. On the north side is a cool water tunnel. If the weather does turn snotty on you, Effingham Bay is well-protected and a good anchorage to hold up. Usually along with other boats.

Keep the family away from Cape Beale in the afternoon when the westerly's pick up, they will not enjoy it!

As far as a swimming pool? I don't have a clue? That area is such a nice place to get in the water? But you can look around here: http://www.vancouverisland.com/regions/towns/byTowns.asp?city=4013

Enjoy the trip!

Oh... thank you guys for the compliments! :)

BTW... does anyone know the difference in why some call it "Barklay" and some call it "Barkley"? It used to be "Barklay" on the charts, but it is now "Barkley"? [:0]

And the old pub in Alberni (before it burned down) used to be called the "Barclay". :D

I have spelled it wrong for many years. I usually use that one "Barclay". It is spelled different on many occasions and with many companies etc.
