engine question IO v OB

Totally rebuilt my leg last year just to check it all out. Replaced all the seals and it all spec'ed out and I'm good for quite a few more years. Mine's not a Dua/Prop but I would say they would be about the same or better.

my carbed 4.3 volvo penta I/O goes 3mpg at 30mph via gps and fuel sensor off HDS
which quickly equates to 10gph at 3600-3800rpm

My inboard gets way better fuel economy than the out board I ran!!! misconception saying inboards burn more or less....out boards like gas just like any other engine!!!

I just want him to pod it cause it would be a cool project;).

What size is your inboard Wolf? You have me looking at numbers now. I guess the higher torque and being able to spin a larger prop at lower rpm really helps.

Thanks
John

I would say your dance floor is big enough even with the doghouse ---mines got outboards so I keep cooler inside ----My last boat with I/O I kept cooler on swim grid,it's a trade off. My last boat with a 4.3 volvo was easy on the fuel, I am sure a 5.0 or 5.3 wouldn't be bad. Podding sounds like a lot of effort for little return.
If you do do it though we want lots of pics.
Haven't forgot about takin you for a ride in mine , just pulled hardtop strut off to get welded where I cracked it due to driver abuse.Have it back together soon.

I was hoping you would chime in as Staying Alive has the outboard version of my boat....or vice versa :P And you pretty much said it, that floor is HUGE. The doghouse does make for a good place to work gear or cut fish/bait (the last owner installed a nice piece of 3/8 hard plactic ontop).

I want to go with an MPI motor for the Eagle 245. The boat originally came with 4.3/5.0/5.7 engine options. Mine currently has the 5.0L Mercruiser. Current MPI motors are rated at 4.3L = 220HP , 5.0L = 260HP, and 5.7L = 300HP.
We have been in more situations than not where MORE POWER was a big benefit (running the waves in from Swiftsure), so I certainly don't want to underpower the boat...like a survival suit, you probably dont 'need' it every outing, but the one time you actually do, you are glad you have it. To have more power available if needed, I see as a safety measure...

StayinAlive, could you post a few of your boats specs with the 225 outboard you run? Top/Cruise/Consumption? Curious to see the near apples to apples comparison as the current 5.0L in my boat is rated for 220hp.

I stroked out a 350 which is 290 to 300 hp its now a 383 stroker with roller cam and rockers with a 650 cfm edlebrock marine 4 barrell and gives me 425 hp and with the duo prop set up ad SS props WOT is 4500 rpm just where I want to be on that engine the bottom end torgue is crazy it gets up on plane in about 25 ft very quick just ask peterman or "oh sure" they both have been in it this year and I thinked loved the ride.

As for legs no matter if you have an inboard or outboard if one goes your looking into money there boats that what they do they beg for money, i take the leg of every year and go thru it all and just do general matenance. if you keep one step ahead of your gear you will be fine let it sit what do you expect????
One thing I have to give rollie credit for is he has a comple set up ready to go at a moments notice hes one of the lucky ones but then hes also running as we call them now a days ol 2 strokes and he can work on them but anyone with a yammy, zuk, merc e tec something goes wrong your into the shop dropping a G note.
With the inboard just about anyone can fix a 350 chev pass me the vise grips and screwdriver please!!! LOL ooohhh langford days!!!! LOL

It all comes down to what money you want to spend and if your handy on working on engines I like the dog house 30 inches wide by 34 long as its a work station for me and keeps shiat off the floor but that me for some else they might not like that, personal preference i like tinkering on engines and see what makes them work as I know this boat inside and out... that complete engine rebuild was not that expensive around $3500 by the time the dust settled less than 5 grand.

That 5.0 or 5.7 litre motor would be a easy 350 bhp build Stroker Motor.

...great post Wolf!

Back in my highschool days I knew my way around a small block somewhat...Im sure once I got back into it it would ring some bells....

are your running a carbed or MPI engine Wolf?

Too true :D

Just straight ol carb for the price of marine MPI didnt fiqure it would pay for its self in the long run. im happy with its performance...

haven't really kept any specs , I just know its thirsty , its a 1994 Mercury 225 Black Max 2-stroke , not fuel efficient at all so its probably a poor comparison , unless of course you want to talk about speed ,it goes like heck, faster than I like to travel at.--- the Boat is rated for a 230 HP ,so I am close to max. HP. You are in a great postion cause you are going to repower --if it will take a 5.7 thats what I would put in it. I,m with you it is better to have that extra HP when you you need it. Having I/O doesnt scare me, I kind of enjoy working on them its always a challenge turning into pretzel Man trying to get at the last 2 sparkplugs. And servicing the bilge pump behind it all is a treat as well. But thats just part of owning a boat.

Bilge is EASY here is a simple solution go down and ask your bud at a sheet metal place for a piece of scrap SS about 2 ft long by about 3 to 4 inches wide drill and mount the base to the end of it you do is bend it in the angles you want sort of in a big L to slide underneath the engine bend it so its sits nice and flat on the bottom of the hull and the other end slides up on to the stringer make sure you have room for it etc you may have to cut it down to customize the fit after its all fitted drill one hole big enough for a short #8 screw at the top of your bracket.
now all now wire it up and zap strap the wires to that piece leave some extra wire for removal so you can take it right out from underneath to remove tooth picks, old line, spits etc!!!
now slide it under and get it into place and get thet #8 screw and sink it into the stringer take it out and put some sika on it.
Now if you need to VERY easy access to you bilge.

good luck wolf

YEAH take about 20 mins to do!!! you spend more time wiring the damn things then making stuff like that...LOL

Transom Assemblies....no body has mentioned them....once bolted up are they good for life or does the transom assembly fail as well over time? Do they require periodic maintenance or is it just for mating the motor to the leg with no moving/mechanical parts??

Yes usually good as long as the transom doesnt sag or rot Ill be honest in saying never had to deal with it alinging the leg to the engine is more important and usually thats not very often...

shes a welded alloy with a wood braced transom...the wood has not seen a drop of water in its 15 years of age. Very solid. Don't imagine there would be any concerns of sagging or rot...was even thinking of swapping out the wood for plate aluminum and then there is definitely no wood in the boat, once i replace the floor that is!

If its all good then leave it lasted this long dont make projects bigger spend money elsewhere Id say...

haha do you know me personally!? making a project bigger than it has to be? Me? Neverrrrr haha.

I should post that message right on the side of my boat!!!
