Driving an EV pickup

Same thing as what happens when you run out of gas.
Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Although not once in over 50 years of driving have I run out of gas. I think it would be the same with an EV. It’s called planning. Don’t plan on going further than you have gas/ battery power to get you there.

Yes, Ford has instructions for using the Lightning's 240v30a socket to charge another EV.

I'm going to guess you plug it into the nearest outlet you find. Slow charge or not, in a few minutes you'll get enough juice to get to a fast charger, or home.
Pretty much this. Stop before it's completely dead, say at 1 km remaing. Knock on doors, cap in hand, and humbly ask for the use of a power outlet for an hour. (Remember, every building is a potential gas station). Spend that hour cursing yourself and searching all the apps for nearest public charger. 120 v charging is Sloooow

Can a EV be towed, like a gas vehicle? I know sometimes you have to remove a driveshaft to prevent damage, on a rear wheel drive gasser. Do you need to worry about driveline damage, while being towed?

Lightning can be towed, in neutral. There's a setting that has to be enabled on the screen to disengage both motors. The owner's manual states towing is a short term emergency thing, not to be flat towed long distances.

I would be more than open to buying an EV pickup, especially here with the stupid price of gas/diesel. But, I refuse to pay the outrageous prices they are asking for new vehicles. I just need transportation, I don't need $30,000 worth of bells and whistles that just make it more likely something will screw up.

Price of trucks is nuts overall. Easy to drop 100K if you want diesel and leather interior. I realised mine at 71K was actually pretty decent price. In theory, EV should become cheaper than ICE once the R&D costs are paid down. Way fewer components than a gas or diesel.

Can’t you just hitchhike to the nearest 110v outlet and get a gerry can full of electricity?
Running out of fuel sucks and is a major inconvenience but having your EV run dry seems a fair bit more complicated. I love the concept of an EV truck and your detailed honest review but until more charging stations become available I’ll stick with fossil fuels.

How many people here have ever run out of gas/diesel in their vehicle? I never have. It is quite simple really, you just keep an eye on the fuel guage. Kind of like the onboard fuel gauge that an EV truck has. One other thing, in an EV truck you are always leaving home with a full tank. I think the empty charge fears are being overblown. But I am still not paying $70+ K for a new vehicle, EV or ICE.

The bearish sentiment around the EV market is pretty interesting, as EV sales are at all time records. Car sales as whole have not slowed down in Q2 and Q3 2023, which is surprising given the US Federal Reserve’s hawkish outlook.

Maybe the manufacturers are trying to keep the sales numbers strong to finish out the year

Re: EVs running out of charge, I haven’t really heard of it happening, tbh. Also, if you run your diesel out of fuel it often means a trip to the shop to have the fuel system bled.

Far more convenient options to top up your gas or diesel tanks.

At least at the moment
Not where I live. I live in Port Moody and work out of Coquitlam. There are a quite a few gas stations in the area and quite a few Tesla supercharger stations in the area. Also, my home is more convenient than either of the above options. Maybe everyone on here drives for a living, but I think that is the exception rather than then norm. I cannot wait to replace my service truck with a plug in electric chassis. My fuel cost is 3k/month for 160km avg 5 days a week

Perfect use case for electrification: high annual mileage, all in the city where diesel is at its worst. But I'm not seeing an electric replacement for commercial heavy duty trucks yet. The problem is F350-450-550 units have a footprint not much bigger than a half ton, but they'd need a battery with about 3 times more capacity to handle the anticipated loads. Where you put all those cells? I think that truck category will be waiting for the next generation of battery chemistry.

BC is really well served for public chargers compared to many other parts of North America, but you don't see them unless you're looking for them. They're not as large and visible as a gas station. I was surprised to find there are over a dozen locations in Penticton, I had noticed maybe two of them. Now of course I have no need to use them since home charging is convenient and a third of the price. Except for the ones near city hall, because they're 2 hour free parking in a busy part of town.

Just for Schitts and giggles, try downloading the free Plugshare app and look around your area, or the highway routes you use, see what there is. You might be surprised.

Same here. Never once in my 25 years of driving have I run empty. Non issue…

However $70k for a brand new lightning seems like good bang for the buck. If you drive over 2000km’s per month you’re likely getting a majority, if not all of the payment covered via fuel savings.
Same can be said for a Tesla model 3. My friend got two, one for him and one for his wife and it’s like a free car upgrade and 5 years of warranty.

I drive 8000km per year. There's no way one of these things would be worth the upgrade for me at this point. My 2015 Ram cost me 35k at a year old and 35000 km on it when I bought it. At this point this truck owes me nothing and any money I have is going straight to the mortgage. When it finally Shitz the bed I'll definitely consider an EV
