Let's re visit this one.
Ok, on the westcoast of B.C. Scotty rule... right?
Scotty have a great warranty and i've always been happy with them,
Yet i've seen a fair number of Penn, Cannon , Big john etc. on local boats.

Your opinion please !

I've got a half dozen or more Scotty's and have had good luck and great service when needed. This season there were a few small glitches like brake springs and switches but I didn't have them serviced last year. So off to Scotty they will go for overhaul. The problem I do have is they don`t pull the 20 pound balls that well. I see Scotty has a new model 2106 that should pull them at 260 feet per minute. Has anyone used them?

Cannons! Mag 20 Stainless Tournament Series that is. They RULE!!
X2

Hmm... let's see?

I bought my Cannon MAG 20's in 1995 (with a life time warranty), that would be how many years? I haven't had to take them in - for anything... and the only thing I have spent on any of the three was to replace one of the DC connectors/plugs!

Yelp, you choose! Plus, Cannon has NO BELTS! LOL!

Scotty is starting to pee me off... Hold on... It really did a few years ago but it pasted with out any effort from Scotty as they are here and I use their gear. I would think about changing all my gear if a deal came around. Just because they really don't seem to care about us as fisherman any more. It all about the $$$. Hey if its about the $$ I should look into what is best for my $.

Belts?? My Scottys don't have belts. Or plugs, for that matter. You high tech guys have too many problems, too many things to go wrong. My vote is for Scottys cuz all I've ever had to change is the wire.

Yes this year i started to have some fahcups with my scotty bad sscable, blown belts & finally they even charged me $55 for a siezed black box repair .oh & last the moter sounds a little slow(thats with a 12lb s.s fin)

I'll stick with Scotty. Local company that supports local fish/fishing events and projects. If your Scotty is slowing down, look at the pulley at the end of the boom...it could be partially seized. Scotty will replace it if it is. I haven't bust a belt ever since they wove the carbon fibre into them. I paid about $450.00 for the riggers I have now and sold the old ones (about 12 years old) for $275.00 each. How much are those Cannons?

You don't even want to know, but they were cheaper than the Scotty's back then and way less than $450.00. Don't forget, I bought all three of mine new, on sale in 1995! And I have no need to replace or even think of upgrade. They work as good and look almost as good as then! Best fishing gear purchase I ever made! LOL

Why did you say you decided to spend that money and upgrade those Scotty's?? Wasn't because they were wore out, was it?? LOl

Wanted to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I was cursing for the first few months dealing with the broken belts, before the kevlar was added. Thought I had made a mistake, never broke a single belt on the 12 year old originals. They are faster than the originals and now the next ones will be even faster. I won't be upgrading this time. Will let others work through the bugs first.

Those Cannon mag 20's better be good for the price they sell for :

Cannon Mag 20 DT/TS Tournament Special Downrigger $999.99* Oversize shipping applies to this item.

I have had the old style scotty's since 1998-two belt -I fish deep most of the time-no blown belts only plug changes of the old type-replaced both end pulleys to the newer style (my choice) and replaced the plug in's and receptacles to the locking plug-serviced every year by Scotty. No problems for me, however doesn't mean there aren't better out there and I keep a scotty manual rigger on board as a spare!!

Ill still stick with scotty Ive been using them close to 30 yrs now remeber the days my dad would go down with me in tow to the old shop to see Mr scott himself and dad would have a "pop" with him in the office, yes times have changed but the boys in there definattly do a good job and being a local company I will always support them,as they have supported me..

Good luck Wolf

Always used Scottys, both manual and electric, for over 20 years with zero problems until last summer, when I had an overload relay go down on one (sixth season on the riggers). Found a guy in Port Hardy who is a Scotty service rep that changed out everything on both my units (and I mean everything), didn't charge me for parts and charged me twenty bucks per unit for labour. I didn't know about these guys until last year, but apparently there are a few scattered around on the Island and elsewhere. I'm told you can get the same type of service in CR at the River Store, but I don't know that to be a fact.

My opinion? Wouldn't use anything else...I'm not a pro, but I spend a lot of time on the water every season (Quatsino) and I can count the problems on one finger.

Tight lines!!

The Penns and Cannons you see were probaby included with the boat when somebody imported the boat from the USA.
Aside from West Marine I can't think of a dealer who handles the foreign dr's.

As stated before, I am not going to bad mouth Scotty… I have way to many friends that have them; however, there is a lot of difference between any Scotty and a Cannon MAG 20. It starts with being maintenance free – no stop beads, no belts, no annual anything Please note, I am referring only to the MAG 20, as I certainly would probably buy a good Scotty, over any older MAG 10!

Those nice pretty Tournament Series Nog has, actually retail for closer to $1400.00 US, right now! That might be why I believe Cannon is discontinuing – priced their selves right out of the market. If you look on the Cannon website, you will see the MAG 20 is no longer listed. It appears, they have now beefed up the MAG 10 series with the same 20 pound weight limit and 250 feet per minute retrieval speed. That has done away with the need for the larger and heavier MAG 15 and MAG 20. I wouldn’t have a problem buying one of those “NEW” MAG 10; however WARNING, do NOT go out and buy an older MAG 10 with the belief it will perform the same as the new ones – it won’t. It will have less weight limit and retrieval speed, and for someone who fishes the salt on a regular basis, you probably will not be happy! I would buy a Scotty over the older MAG 10s! LOL

Ditto on Cannons. I like Charlie bought mine new in the early 90's. The only thing I've ever replaced on them is the ends when they became corroded. New Cannon's these days are around $400 most places and are even faster and better. They use Minn Kota motors and don't have belts to break. They just work that's all I can say.
