Downrigger getting tired?

15 lb boat, 15 lb balls. Goes hand and hand

Yeah my 15 ft boat OMFG. Tell me does a mechanic vs engineer doesn't go hand in hand? haahaha. Just kidding you. I would make them too but don't think there is any money in it. Not a hard a design. Just need volume.

You need to make them less than that other outfit in mid island. Those or CNC mill/lathe solid block aluminum. Good luck, and want to see what you come up with.

******* engineers eh? I'm going to leave the engineer out of the equation and let the mechanics and machinists have at her. @kanuckle head

Yep I am same. I am the guy between the engineer and machinist ,and all hands on with own equipment. Draw it, weld it, build it etc, calculate it. Not the theory guy but understand the other stuff the higher engineers do, and had to implement it.

We will see. I will post back with results and I hope we can fix this
i saw a post somewhere that a person had taken some sched 80 pvc pipe and made a collar.. crush proof and cheap.

Yeah I dunno, I'm not sold. That entire bottom half of that spool is not good enough. Gonna delete some things and get it down to a stainless plate and some plastic that does wear out. We have a plan

Yeah same as you. Mine are from 2010. I run 15lbs. Fish Renfrew, Barkley, Alberni, Sooke, Nanaimo etc etc. Only thing that goes on them are the brake, and counters. I had one belt go once.
Same for me. Counters and brake pads. A friend of mine does Scotty service in Hardy. He tuned them up for me last year. Great guy.

That is crazy. I've never replaced a spool. Riggers are 06 with old Scotty blue braid taken from my previous boat. 40 plus days a year trolling with 15 pound balls.
I’ve had mine since 1991 using them 100 plus days a year and never replaced a spool yet

I’ve had mine since 1991 fishing 100-130 days a year up until 2019 and never replaced a spool unless Scotty did when servicing them. 15 lb balls and steel wire mostly.

They don't make em like they used to!

I had some older ones too, never had issue with, from the mid nineties, when I bought my wellcraft it came with newer ones, so sold my old ones for 250$ a piece, big mistake lol, the newer ones seem to always need attention, they are pretty basic to service, but definitely not built like the older ones

Spools are coming I just need a month sea trials
Simplicity in its design but the problem is 100pecent solved. Scotty's flaw in there design can be easily rectified but a new mold will be required. That weak point may not falter on 15lb balls but eventually will still be a weak area, lacking in material and too sharp of a inside corner

The non breakable bottom spool half. Bolts right up. 316 x 3/16 and delrin.

We tried to make it simple. No need for the stainless brake plate anymore

The prototypes are built and getting installed tomorrow. Need to give them some abuse and see how they roll

Big shouts out to limorlaser and @kanuckle head

These are mounted and very smooth. Brakes are happier than I have ever seen on a scotty machine. Install is easy enough. Will work with a manual counter add on if need be. Need to put it through a few paces however I'd say this whole problem is fixed.

I have alot of material
