BB as in browns bay? Aside from chum, pinks when they are passing through hasnt the fishing been awful the last few years? Wouldnt be fun going on a trip and scraping for a fish.

Fishing in the Browns Bay area is the ****s until August-September months. Was great last year for the Pinks and Chum!

I took the father in law to Port Hardy last year in June. Mixed bag of fish caught at Duval point and surrounding areas. I would love to head back there this year in July or August for a Tyee or two :D

Reel Chaos

One of those fishermen mentioned that they saw a 12' boat with a couple of fishermen on it, fishing offshore somewhere on WCVI years ago. Yikes! [B)] I have seen most 16' and up venturing out as far as 10 miles offshore.

it might of been this past summer or the one before, we were fishing offshore about 20 miles or so and it was foggy but out of no where this little 14-16ft lund comes whizzing behind us....the 4 of us on our boat were like, did that just happen???.... it was pretty interesting to see...i wonder if it was you guys???

I even get looks in my 17.5 fter at 7 mile but have stuck to my word of not taking it out any furthur even in good weather. Just not enough boat for offshore... anything smaller its just stupid to be offshore.

I'll agree it depends on the conditions, on the east coast of the states guys are taking 17ft whalers 20-30 miles offshore. While in the Charlotte's I've taken the lodge boats 10-15 miles but we only do it when it flat and the forecast are good. Funny thing we never do any better out that far.

I would vote, Ucluelet!

Out of Ucluelet, there are “at least” seven or eight well-known areas that “hold” both U.S., Fraser, and Roberson fish within seven miles of Amphitrite Point. If you do have to run to Big Bank it is 17 nm from Amphitrite, but you pass right by South Bank and Outer South Bank. Both usually hold fish and if you stop at either, you normally don’t need to run to Big Bank, depending on time of year and the other thing… are currents, you also have Lighthouse Bank?

Can all of them be done safely in a 16/17 foot boat, yes. Offshore you will have “swells” and “chop”… at Cape Beal you very well could have “BREAKERS”! If you are running 17 knots that equates to one hour run time from Ucluelet. In the early morning (IN FOG- and flat), you can be there in less than 45 minutes? I have done it many times myself, in a sixteen foot. Would I do it now… probably not; but if I were, I would leave out of Ucluelet at 5:30 and plan on being back in at 11:00 before the wind waves and chop. It might not be the smartest thing one can to do… but I have been doing it for years - just now in a much larger boat. I could have a reason for that! :)

It does bring up a couple of my two favorite quotes:

“Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.”

“Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment.”

I think everyone knows a 19 feet or less will not sink; however, they will "all" still “capsize” and it happens fast! Need to keep that in mind! I bet the 17-foot off Esperanza Inlet, the 24- foot off Nitinat Narrows, the 29-foot off Mission Bay, or any of the other 200 boats mentioned capsizing in 2009, never thought they would have a problem either? Dingo..
the BEST most FUN fishery I have ever seen for KIDS is the port alberni sockeye fishery.. TONS of action, not boaring and there is a great forcast ahead for fish this year... but no word yet from DFO on openings..
Best time is mid june to end of july. A 17 ft boat is no problem ..it it like fishing on a big lake.. The wind does blow up in the aft but the Sockeye fishery is a first light thing anyways.. so you must be up pretty early to have the best sucess. You will want to run 4 rods and if it is anything like last year your kid will have a blast!

No kidding...600,000 good reasons to try sockeye. I would expect to see a June opening, and likely will be 4/day. Better match for a 17 foot boat than going off shore. Quite frankly even on a calm day, I would be concerned about getting caught in a sudden change in weather. Anyone who fishes off shore for any length of time will be able to tell you a few horror stories about times when they got caught in much larger boats.
